FOOTBALL REFEREEING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As a constant attendee at Carisbrook this season I would like to comment on the refereeing. Of all the referees I have seen this season there are hardly two that interpret the rules the same way. Take, for instance, the scrums. One referee will penalise a player if he passes the front row men to go round the scrum before the ball comes out, which, I think, is right. Another referee will let a player go right round the scrum as long as he keeps behind tho hall, and, as soon as the ball is out, pounce on to tho halfhack. Now, take the Southern and Varsity match this season. Mr Macassey controlled that game perfectly. He kept tho players in their place, and they knew and kept in place, for they knew what to expect. I think it is about time the referees woke up to this point, and then we would see better football. There is far too much scouting round the scrums. I hope this is kept in mind next Saturday.—l am, etc., Wake Up, June 23.
