TRAINING COLLEGES’ TOURNEY

DUNEDIN ASSURED OF SHIELD BOTH HOCKEY MATCHES WON By winning both hockey matches at Logan Park this morning the Dunedin Training College established a clearcut lead in championship points in the tournament with the Christchurch Training College, and firmly consolidated its chances of winning the shield. As the result of these games, which were each won easily, the local college collected four points, the. aggregates now being: Dunedin 9, Christchurch 3. The tournament was concluded this afternoon. MEN’S MATCH. The teams; — Dunedin Training College.—G. S. Maslin, S. Mehaffey, H. M. Hutton, K. Lockhart, J. F. Urquhart, E. Hughes, R, T. M'Kelvey, J. w. Keown, M. "Wilson, J. Johnson. In the first session Dunedin held a definite advantage through better combination, the visitors mainly relying on individual work. The play was full of incident and very fast, and in the first minute of the game Maslin, the Dunedin goalie, stopped a stinging shot. For a lengthy period first one side and then the other launched hot attacks, and towards the end of the spell Dunedin scored, M'Kelvey (centre forward), who was the of the local team’s movements, receiving a pretty centring shot from Hughes and netting. . Christchurch attacked strongly in the second spell, and was rather unlucky in not scoring early in the proceedings. Filer was playing a very solid game for the visitors, and he cleared brilliantly when Dunedin stormed the goal. The local side now had the territorial advantage, and the succeeding play was notable for several smart saves by Maister, who was a fine last line of defence for the visitors. He had no chance, however, when, following a melee in front of the goal, Keown hit hard into the net.

Dunedin now held a 2-goal lead. Over-eagerness was leading to too much off-side play at this stage. Towards the end Dunedin further increased its lead, Urquhart netting, and M'Kelvey scoring 2, the last one being a spectacular shot from near the sideline just before the whistle. Dunedin opened the scoring with a penalty goal after the visitors had nearly netted as the result of impressive play by Miss Blackadder. Misses Stewart and M'Neur were associated in several forceful 'rushes, and the second goal came when, shortly before half-time, Miss Cannon made an opening for these two. Miss Stewart netting. Dunedin 2, Christchurch 0. The visitors were unfortunate in not scoring at the opening, of the second spell, Miss Blumhardt over-shooting. Dunedin then netted twice in quick succession, Miss Stewart being the scorer on both occasions. Miss Blackadder saved well for Christchurch in the succeeding play, and then Miss Trounce made a promising opening, but Miss Rich just shaded the net with her shot at goal, and Dunedin to the other end. The visitors came back again, however, and in the last five minutes of the game persistency, was rewarded, Miss Rich netting. Final: — Dunedin Training College ... 4 Christchurch Training College 1 Messrs Silver and Kinder were the referees.
