YOUNG MEN'S BUSINESS SOCIETY

The Dunedin Young Men’s Advertising apd Business Society held its weekly meeting last Thursday night in the Chamber of Commerce rooms, Dowling Street. Mr N. Croft occupied the chair, and the business of the society was quickly dealt with. Mr A. S. Warren was the speaker for the evening, and his subject was ‘ Psychology.’ Mr Warren said that psychology covered a wide field, and for that reason he chose a more elementary subject—namely, ‘ Nerve.’ The speaker said that, by nerve, he did not mean boldness and cheek, but rather a blend of courage, presence of mind, self-re-liance, initiative and dash. The speaker went on to say that when there is fear in a company the whole place is slowed down; people do not do their best when they are afraid, their positive qualities become oppressed. On the other hand, if a man at the head of a business has nerve and kindliness his Employees develop positive qualities and will not worry about self-protection, but develop a spirit of loyalty which is priceless.

Mr Warren pointed out Pitt, Rhodes, Clive, etc., as men who had nerve and how these men displayed courage and fortitude and became famous through eorae > act of nerve. The speaker also mentioned the boys and girls of the present day who neglected thier opportunities of self-advancement. They never bothered to Join clubs or visit libraries, art galleries, or museums, but would rather stay in a rut. In spite of the fact that all kinds of subjects were catered for in modern schools, none of these schools taught ambition. In conclusion, Mr Warren said that hundreds of opportunities awaited those who had nerve, but to have nerve one must be prepared for his opportunities and be able to see things when they arrived and havo the courage to take them when they did arrive. Mr W. Harris also gave a short talk on the same subject, and although he had some different views on the matter he agreed on the main points. Members then had an opportunity to discuss the talks, and some very good views on the subject were brought forward, in some cases being actual occurrences ju business. 1
