MONDAY, APRIL 26. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. George Milson Pocklingtou was fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. A first offender was fined £l, with a similar default. THEFT OF BICYCLE LAMP. , A youth, aged 20, admitted the theft of a bicycle lamp belonging to a telegraph messenger. Chief-detective Young said that the messenger left his bicycle in a right-of-way adjacent to the Regal Skating Rink on April 15, and returned later and discovered that tho lamp vas missing. Inquiries were made, and Detective Brown ascertained that the accused had been seen near the vicinity of the machine. He was interviewed, and admitted he had sold the lamp to a boy of 1? for 3s 6d. The lamp was valued at 10s. Inquiries were made regarding his previous history: Ids homo was searched but no articles were found. “ There has been quite a number of this type of theft,” commented the chief detective. “As stated, there is no evidence that this lad has been responsible for them.” The Magistrate: What made you take the lamp? The accused: Just temptation, 1 suppose. His Worship commented that this was a particularly despicable form of theft. He adjourned the case for a week to enable the, probation officei to submit a report. The accused’s name was suppressed in tho meantime. MAINTENANCE. The magistrate gave his reserved judgment in the case in which John Arthur Cameron, jun., was proceeded against on a complaint fpr an affiliation order in respect of an illegitimate child.—After reviewing- the evidence His Worship refused to make an order, and dismissed the case. James Radcliffo was proceeded against on a - complaint for default of a maintenance order,' the arrears to March 15 last being £l4 10s. —The defendant was sentenced to three weeks’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he pays £9 on or before May 10 and a further £8 before June 10,

John Percy Johnson was proceeded against for default of a maintenance order, the arrears to March 8 las't amounting to £6B 16s.—Johnson was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment in the Auckland gaol, the warrant to bo suspended if he pays £5 on or before May 23, and a similar amount on ■the same day of each suceeding month until the arrears are remitted.

Frederick Edward Hellyer (Mr E. J. Anderscm) was proceeded against by his wife (represented by Mr C. J. L. White) on a complaint for separation and maintenance orders.—The complainant gave evidence, and said that she was married in 1927. Differences arose over five years ago, and precipitated the present trouble. The court adjourned till the afternoon.
