HOSTILE RESOLUTION [Per United Press Association.] TIMARU, April 23. . a Jargely attended indignation meeting of the ratepayers of Levels County to-day a resolution was carried:—“That this meeting is of the opinion that" there should be no interference in the existing counties in South Canterbury until the proposals of the Government for amalgamation of local bodies have been translated into legislation and until the ratepayers of each county affected by the amalgamation have been consulted.” A deputation was appointed to wait on the Levels Council to ask it to oppose amalgatation until a referendum of the ratepayers had been taken. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 23. Representatives of the county councils in Taranaki are to hold a conference to consider the proposals by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry) that the 10 county councils in the province should be reduced to two, one in the north and one in the south.

Following his meeting with southern bodies yesterday, the Minister to-day met the North Taranaki local body representatives and placed before them his proposal for the amalgamation of the Clifton and Inglewood and the Egmont and Taranaki counties. The representatives subsequently discussed the proposals in committee and agreed to call a conference.
