FIREPROOF SHIPS
A passenger vessel, the first to be rebuilt in compliance _ with the r„-w regulations of the United States Department of Commerce to eliminate for the first time in history the hazard from fire at sea. has been delivered to its owners by the Maryland Dry-dock Company. It will be operated in the West Indies service, and carries 64 passengers and a crew of 47. The inerco Department fire regulations, which will apply to all future shin construction, permit' 10 per mnt. of the material used to he wood. Tlis Catherine, the name of the rebuilt vessel, has less than 1 per cent, of wood in her. The remainder of her construction is of steel, fireproof composition materia], and compressed asbestos. Staterooms, walls, clours and floors are insulated. Even bedclothes, draperies, and furniture are treated to resist fire. The ship has an elaborate fire detection and alarm system.
