Mr Stanley Baldwin, addressing his constituents, probably for the last time, said he had always felt that for the country’s, party’s, and one’s own sakes the moment one had given one’s best one should ask to be relieved of the burden. It was better to go before the people knew one was becoming incompetent. He warned the country against hasty changes which would wreck the Constitution and bring disaster and bloodshed to millions. Russia, Germany, and Italy were governed by ideals alien to England, which could not help in solving their problems, yet they must not carelessly assume that Fascism or Communism could not happen in England. Mechanism and materialism would bring the danger of mass suggestion and mass movements. They must keep themselves immune from the virus of Fascism and Communism alike.
