—Vice-regal.—> The Governor-General, Lord Galway,arrived in Christchurch from Welling** ton on Saturday morning on an_ inferraal visit, accompanied by his aide-de-camp, Captain R. Stuart-French. On Saturday His Excellency paid a number of informal calls, including a visit to the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes,Otahuna. He also attended the polo at Hagley Park. Yesterday morning His Excellency attended matins at the Cathedral, after which he was the guest of Mrs Hampton Rhodes at lunch. In the afternoon he presented at Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry with its new fuidon and took tea with the officers, larly this morning His Excellency left on a shooting trip to the Rake Sumner district. He will return to Christchurch on Friday, April 23, and leave for the north that evening.

—Ministerial. — The Hon. F. Jones, Postmaster-Gene, ral and Minister of Defence, left this morning on a visit to Milton, Balclutha, and Owaka on departmental business, and will return to Dunedin this evening. To-morrow evening the Minister will attend tho social to be tendered to Mr G. A. Lewin, the retiring town clerk, in the Somerset Lounge of the Savoy, and on Wednesday afternoon he will officially open the new Post Office.

Mr H. J. Grayson left this morning for Wellington to attend the annual meeting of the Council of Underwriters. Miss Mauri Mebana, _ the Maori singer, travelled to Christchurch by the early express to-day. Mr W, Herbert left for Wellington this morning to attend an industrial conference.

Mr C. H. Wing left for Christchurch to-day to attend Dominion executive and council meetings of the Boy Scouts’ Association.

Shanks, Acting DirectorGeneral of the Post and Telegraph Department, arrived in Dunedin on Saturday afternoon. Miss Mary K. Neff left by the express this morning to finish her tour of New Zealand before leaving for the American Theosophical Convention at Illinois, via Los Angeles. A Wellington Association message records that Mr Johannes Andersen retired from the position of librarian of the Turnbull Library as from March. 31 last, and is succeeded by Mr C. RTaylor, the assistant librarian. A recent arrival in Port Chalmers is Mrs T. Robertson, who, accompanied by her husband, is visiting Mrs F. Goodyear. Mrs Robertson, M.8.E., whose home before the, war was in Port Chalmers, is better known as Nurse Watson. Nurse Watson spent the war period in the Walton-on-Thames Hospital, and for services rendered to her country was decorated with the M.8.E., and was the first of the nursing staffs to have that distinction bestowed upon her. During her travels through New Zealand many returned soldiers who were patients' in that hospital have renewed the ; r acquaintance. Mr T. Robertson (now retired) was a teacher of note, having been for many years classics master of Bell Hill Academy, Glasgow. His brother, Mr J. Robertson, who has published many mathematical text books-, is regarded as an outstanding authority in mathematics. Latest guests at the Grand, Hotel are Mr H. A. Linfoot (London), Mr and Mrs Alex.
