NAVY LEAGUE DANCE

FOR PETTY OFICERS AND MEN FROM H.M.A.S. AUSTRALIA A most delightful dance was held on Thursday evening in the Concert Chamber, given by the local branch of the Navy League for the petty officers and men from the visiting warship. Some 200 invitations were sent to the ship, and the league invited the same number of girls as partners. The president (Mr Sutherland Ross) and Mrs Ross received the guests, the latter wearing a frock of grey embossed ninon. They were assisted by Airs R. S. Black, black velvet frock with tiny white lace collar at the close-fitting neckline; Airs Gerald Fitzgerald, frock of floral ninon; Airs W. O. M'Kellnr, figured silk frock with accordion-pleated sleeves; and Aliss Wallace, who, with Air Kilmartin, ably controlled the floor. Others present were the mayor and mayoress. Airs Cox wearing a frock of white taffeta patterned in a primrose design, Commander F. Fraser, R.N.Y.R., and Airs Fraser (black frock with a lacquered design in red and white), Captain and Airs E. F. Watson (frock of dusty pink lace), Mr and Mrs F. Salinger (black frock, with blousette in pink, and black velvet coatee), and Miss BTaser (black lace frock). The hall was effectively decorated with bunting, and a howl of lovely dahlias was used with pot plants to decorate the stage, which was arranged as a lounge. An excellent band was provided, and this was augmented by members of the ship’s band for several numbers. Supper _ was served in the supper room adjoining, at the conclusion of which the president of the league extended a welcome to the men from H.AI.A.S. Australia, and convyed to them the best wishes of the league members, who were glad to do all in their power to make their stay in our waters an enjoyable one. He thanked the mayor and the city councillors for lending the hall for the _ evening, and the ladies who had so kindly come to assist.
