TAITA HOUSING SCHEME

OBJECTION BY RESIDENTS PREJUDICE TO MARKET GARDEKIKG [Pek United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 12. Strong objection to tho intention of the Government to take land at Taita (Hutt Valley) for housing purposes was raised by a meeting of 80 owners and residents. Five points of objection were contained in the which was carried unanimously, and is to bo forwarded to the Government. The objections to the proposal are: 1. These lands comprise one of the few areas reasonably close to Wellington City entirely suitable for market gardening. Their high market value and their use for market gardening purposes for many years past show that ■this is the ease. 2. Tho lands at present have no transport facilities by rail and no sewerage. To provide these will require considerable capital expenditure, which could bo avoided, as regards rail transport in any case, by taking land elsewhere. 3. If these lands are taken an industry of value to Wellington City will-he seriously affected, and the market gardeners concerned will have difficulty in finding suitable areas anywhere reasonably close to Wellington City. 4. For housing purposes ample areas are available at Tawa Flat, Upper Hutt, and the Wainui Valley, The first two mentioned areas are served by tho railways, and in the case of all three areas the lands could he obtained without disturbing any man from his home or place of business.
