CHAMPION ATHLETES

NEW ZEALAND AMATEURS RECORDS BROKEN—PULLAR'S FAST MILE THREE TITLES TO OTAGO [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 12. The New Zealand amateur athletic championships were commenced to-day, when splendid racing and keen competition were features of the preliminary heats. The track was dead after the rain, but the times generally were fast. The one-mile championship resulted in a great struggle between W. A. C. Pullar (Otago) and A. R. Wilson (Wellington). The pair outclassed the field, and Pullar, running a finely-judged race, defeated Wilson by two feet. The time] 4 min 14 4-ssec, was a wonderful performance considering the dead track. Two other Otago competitors also won titles —J. H. Opie the pole vault and A. A. Cameron the discus throw. During the afternoon Miss R. Tong (Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay Centre) won the 80 yards ladies’ hurdles heat in 11 4-ssec, a New Zealand record. In the 220 yards hurdles championship E. P. Newburgh (Canterbury) registered 25 1-sstc, which is a new record for a straight track. Following are the results (H.P. denotes Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay; A., Auckland; TV., Wellington; C., Canterbury; 0., Otago; W.C., West Coast): — 100 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP, FIRST HEAT W. <T. Pullar had the advantage of two yards, but 50 yards from the tape Wilson made a game effort, only to be beaten by two feet. Pullar ran a finely-judged race, and was the fresher at tho finish. Wilson put up a splendid performance. Endeavouring to hold his effort to 50 yards from home, he found Pullar a determined runner to stall off.
