CROMWELL MEETING

SURGE WINS BIG HANDICAP DOUBLE TO HATTY The weather was sunny but windy for the opening day of the Cromwell Jockey Club’s seventieth annual meeting, and, thanks to the wet summer experienced in Central Otago this year, the course carried an excellent sward of grass, and has never been in better condition for racing on. The attendance was well up to the usual, but did not include as many visito-s from down country as usual. Excepting in the opening event the fields were better than usual, especially in the two trotting races. The racing was quite interesting, and backers of first favourites bad four wins. After the Quecnsberry Handicap, in which Last Link appeared to bore Silver Sail out in the run home, the Judicial Committee decided to reverse the judge’s placing, and J. W. Dooley, rider of Last Link, was suspended for two months. During the afternoon £2,510 10s was invested on the machine as compared with £2,027 10s on the corresponding day last year.
