HEARING THE WORLD

DX NEWS FROM EVERYWHERE AMERICANS TO TUNE FOR. Reception of the stations located on the North American Continent has been consistently good between the evening hours of 7 and 8, so a small list of the best, in addition to the ones published in this column a fortnight ago, would not bo out of place. These are;—KFBK, Sacramento, 1,490 kc; ROMA, Oklahoma, 1,480 kc; KGER, Long Beach, 1,360 kc; RGB, San Diego, 1,330 kc; KFAC, Los Angeles, l>3ookc; and XEAW, Reymosa, Mexico, 960 kc. The South American stations are now putting in an appearance, several being heard on Wednesday afternoons between 3 and 5 o’clock. LS2, Buenos Aires, Argentine, on 1,190 kc, and LRB,, also in Buenos Aires, on 1,150 kc, have been the best. The former uses a power of 30,000 watts, while LRB uses, only 7,000 watts. Those stations are heard best between 3 and 5 p.m. from April to August. . Next to the eastern stations,, the most interesting, and perhaps the most thrilling, DX field, is Europe, with its huge transmitters and giant masts. Several European stations were heard last week at varying strengths, with the Italian and French ones predominating. Toulouse (l,080kc), Nice (1,185 kc), and Juan Lo Pans (1,275 kc), all in France and Bari, and Italy (1,059 kc) are the best. The two Italians, Milan (81 Ike), Eaples (1,104 kc), and Lyons, France (1,393 kc) are also being heard well. The Commonwealth stations continue to provide the excellent signals being heard shortly after 7.15 p.m. 2BH, Broken Hill, New South Wales, has moved from 1,330bc to 1,060 kc, while another new station is supposed to be operating in Launceston, Tasmania, on 900 kc, under the call sign of 7QO. The 900 kc channel is already occupied by the powerful 2LM, Listnore, but no •‘ shuffle ” has been noticed. More than likely 7QC is still in the testing period, and operates mostly in the early morning hours, _ and very little while 2LM is transmitting. SOUTH DUNEDIN LOGGINGS. , The South Dunedin branch of the New Zealand DX Radio Association met on Wednesday. March 3. A good attendance was presided over by Mr W. R. Isaacs. A new member was welcomed. The principal business was the election of delegates to the annual conference of the DX.R.A. to be held in Christchurch at Easter, the president (Mr Isaacs), the secretary (Mr J. Sanderson), and Mr W. F. Crooko being appointed to represent the branch. * . A number of interesting verifications produced included those from the following:— ZJV, Suva; 6WA, Minding, Western Australia; TI3V. Costa Rica; LUIUA, LU4BH, Argentina; VK9MI, motor, ship Kanimbla; TI2OFR. T Co , s . ta Rica; ON4MJ. Belgium; ZMBJ. the Awatea; HJIABP, Colombia; OH-01, Finland; XEIGR, Mexico; VP9G, Bermuda. • • •. • „ Mr Crooke’s verification from Suva was judged, the best of the fortnight. Numerous competitions are now under way, arid, judging by the quality of the losrgings, some very interesting “ tussles ” should take place.
