RADIO THEATRE GUILD
PREPARING FOR BROADCASTING It is generally Recognised that thers is a considerable amount of unknown radio ability in Australia, which re-* mains unknown owing to lack of facilities for development of the required technique (states a Sydney publication). The possession of a good voice is pot necessarily a sign that it is suitable for broadcasting. Just as in theatrical work it is necessary tp learn stage diction, so in broadcasting there is a distinct technique required, and when recordings are being made yet another method of voice production. In the past the lack of a chance to learn these things has resulted in many, aspirants to radio work becoming discouraged through giving faulty auditiops. In practically every audition the performer is satisfied, and. cannot understand why his services are not eagerly, sought by the broadcasting people.. The plain truth is that through-inability to hear their own voices thesewould-be broadcasters are not able to correct their faults. , . This question has given Featuradio Sound Productions so much food, for thought that the directors have decided to form what is actually a developmental laboratory 1 as applied to radio pro--ductions, and as a result, has established within the Featuradio, organisation the Radio Theatre Guild. In casting recent productions considerable difficulty was experienced in finding satisfactory voices, aiid in most’ cases when the right type of voice was discovered it lacked the necessary knowledge of microphone technique which was essential. The studios are specially designed and the technical equipment enables a recording of a rehearsal to be taken, which can then be played back., thus affording the performers the priceless opportunity, of hearing their own Voices and of having their eirors pointed out and corrected while still fresh in their memory.
