CROQUET ITEMS
Coming Tournaments, March 16.—New Zealand gold and silver mallets. Hamilton. March 26.—Alexandra Easter tourney, at Alexandra. Easter.—Cambridge Croquet Club’s tournament, Cambridge. Shield Matches. Owing to weather conditions this week’s matches were postponed. Draw for next Tuesday: Seniors, Caversham v. Watea. Fern Matches. Result of last Saturday’s match; Opoho 86, Logan Park 67. On Tuesday the postponed match, Punga v. Watea, will be played; on Wednesday Tainui will play Logan Park; and on Friday Opoho will play Punga—all on the association lawns. Alexandra Tournament. This tourney will commence on March 26, when most of the local clubs will be represented. Entries close with the secretary (Mrs J. APNish, Alexandra), on Thursday next. Opoho Club. Members of the Opoho Club entertained the trophy winners at a complimentary tea at. the Gardens Kiosk last Wednesday. Tho honoured guests were Mrs W. Cole Mrs Milliu, Mr J. Nichol, and Air J. Tannock. On behalf of the members, Mrs Nichol welcomed the guests and expressed the pride of the club in their aheievements at the recent tournaments. She particularly referred to Airs Cole, who had been runner-up in the Dominion women’s singles and winner of both the Southland and Otago championships. Air J. Tannock had distinguished himself by winning the English Association’s gold medal. Airs Neill endorsed Airs Nichol’s congratulations. and presented Airs Cole and Airs Milliu with baskets of carnations and roses, and the gentlemen with gifts of cigarettes. The recipients suitably acknowledged the gifts and good wishes. Personal. Airs Buchler, who is visiting New Plymouth, entered for the Taranaki tournament. Otago Croquet Association. A meeting of the Otago Croquet Association was held on Thursday, Airs Briggs (president) being in the chair. Tho main business of tho meeting was the report on the annual tournament, held in February. Airs At'Dnnald (secretary of tho association) reported a credit balance of approximately £lO.
After some discussion, it was decided to hold the closing party, at which the association’s trophies will be presented to the successful teams, towards the end of April. The secretary would like all lists of handicaps and of annuals required for next season to be in her hands by April 30. Mrs McDonald signified her willingness to act ns corresponding secretary to the council until the end of the year, and desires that all items of interest for insertion in the ‘ Gazette ’ bo sent to her before the 10th of each month.
