DREDGING ON THE CLUTHA
ENGLISH COMPANY’S VENTURE OPERATIONS COMMENCED [Special to the 4 Star.’} CROMWELL, March 13. In perfect weather,; before a large gathering, the public, including visitors from Dunedin and elsewhere and officials representing English investors, were taken on board the. Clutha Dredging Company’s dredge at Alexandra this morning to witness are opening by the Hon. P. C. Webb. Mr W. F. Forrester, representing the New Zealand attorneys of the company, introduced the Minister, and gave a brief survey of previous dredging schemes, and trusted that the dredge would gain results never attained. He thanked all connected with the construction of the dredge. The Minister expressed the Government’s appreciation of the initiative of the English company. He was convinced that dredging offered the greatest possible prospects for gold -mining in New Zealand. Mining after testing the ground was now an investment. Unfortunately it.' was .impossible in a river to boro and test': ground. The English investors deserved credit for what must be speculation and a gamble. . The .Government was especially interested in the protection of the interests of those investors who .were not in a position to make a personal investigation and who trusted them in New Zealand. The Government and his department would protect" the investors’ interests to the greatest extent. The dredge might be termed tho Awatca of New Zealand gold dredges. On its success depended the success of gold dredging on the Clutha. He hoped it would reward the investors, and his best wishes went to the success of the venture. ■ The power was then turned on and operations commenced. The ladder was lowered to the river bed and the buckets brought material from the bed. The plant functioned perfectly. A dinner will be held to-mght at Alexandra.
