(Received March _ 13, at 12.40 p.m.) The second series of London wool sales for 1937 closed with an offering of 9,431 bales (including 3,607 from New Zealand), and 9,089 bales were sold. This moderate selection met with active competition at full current rates. For New Zealand greasy merinos (Dungree), the top price was 22d, average 20Jd. Greasy cross-bred (Tepnru), 17|d to 162 d. Throughout the series 75,300 bales have been offered and 72,500 sold. The Home trade bought 40,500, the Continent 32,000. * Competition was active throughout the sales. Compared with last London sales closing rates greasy merino advanced 5 per cent., scoured merino firm, cross-bred greasy par to 5 per cent, advance; coarsest descriptions show the greatest advance; slipe cross-bred advanced 6 ■per cent., oross-bred scoured advanced 5 per cent. Quotations: —60-64’s, New Zealand merino, yielding 48 per cent., 17d (15Jd at close of last series); 66’s, half-bred, yielding 64 per cent., 17d (16Jd); 50’s, fine cross-bred, yielding 70 per cent., 16d (15d); 44-46’s, preparing, yielding 76 per cent., 16d (16d); 44-46’s, carding, yielding 74 per cent., 15 Jd (14|d); 40-44’s, yielding 75 per cent., 15Jd (14Jd); 36-40’s, 76 per cent., 15d (14Jd); 46-48’s, mixed preparing and carding, 74 per cent., 15Jd (14Jd); 48-50’s, mixed preparing and carding, 72 per cent., 15Jd (14-Jd). The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand Ltd. has received the following cablegram from its London office, under date the 12th inst:—“ The auctions closed here today at their best point and with very keen competition. All sections of the trade are buying. Compared with opening rates we quote:—Greasy merino, best, Jd to Id dearer; greasy merino, average, Jd dearer; half-breds, 50-56, unchanged; cross-breds, 48-50, unchanged; cross-breds, 46-48, 44-46, 40-44, 36-40, Jd dearer; slipe wools generally Jd dearer. The total quantity offered was 75,332 bales, of which 72,500 hales were sold. Carried forward, 6,500 bales, including 2,000 from New Zealand.”
