MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the executive of the Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association (Inc.) was held on Tuesday evening, when there were pfesent— Mr J. L. Gardiner (president) in the fchair, arid Messrs S. t*. Abufn, J. B. Macassey, H. L. Smith, J. C. H. Somerville, and W- J. Winefield, _ The secretary gave' details of Various negotiations with the Customs Department undertaken on behalf of members, and his action in the matter was approved. The secretary reported also that at the request of a member pf the -association he had prepared a detailed statement of the position of importers and their disabilities, when vessels discharged at Port Chalmers rather than at Dunedin wharf. Full particulars Were given as to extra cost, increased risk of damage, and substantial delay in delivery when vessels ’ discharged at the port. The question had also been dealt with from the steamers’ point of view, full information being given as to depth of water, etc., in the Upper Harbour. It was understood that the report would be forwarded by the members coricerried to their representatives in , London, , who wished to take the mattfef up there. The statement was fully approved by those present. The next matter waS that of correspondence with the Importers’ Federation, Wellington, dealing with the question of the recent demand by the Customs department for a much greater and more detailed ainpurit of statistical information than heretofore in the' passing of entries. The federation reported that the question was still the Subject of inquiry. The secretary reported that two fresh claims had been brought before him during the iriorith, of which frill particulars wSre laid before the meeting., Ho added that both were still under discuscussion with those interested.

A general discussion of various matters of interest to importers and shippers, including . local cartage rates,, the licensing of vehicles, and the question of refrigerated space available' for shipment/of perishable produce to ports outside the United Kingdom, concluded the meeting.
