PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION EXPENSES
No less than £400,000 is the estimated total expenditure by all political parties in booking time for themselves “ on the air ” during the United States Presidential election campaign just concluded. The National Broadcasting Company alone is presenting a bill of about £IOO,OOO to the various parties. Surprisingly large sums were spent by such minority parties as the Communists, who expended £4,000 for broadcasts over one wireless “ chain ” alone, and contracted to spend a further £3,000 with the same “ chain ” during the final days of the campaign. Most of Mr Boosevelt’s speeches this year have had to be paid for (says a .Reuter message from New York). When h,e _ speaks as President, and on non-political topics, his remarks are diffused over national “ hook-ups ” \yithout charge, as a matter of public interest; but when he speaks as the candidate of his party his time is restricted and paid for exactly as is that of the other candidates.
