AMERICAN BIRTHDAYS
The late Senator Huey Long is now a member of the select group of Americans whose birthdays are celebrated as public holidays, for one of the results of the recent elections in Louisiana has been the adoption of his birthday as a legal holiday throughout that State. Seven other deceased Americans are commemorated in the same fashion somewhere or other within the American Union (says the ‘ Manchester Guardian ’). Washington’s birthday is a legal holiday in all the States, territories, and overseas possessions. Lincoln’s is observed in 29 of the 48 States, as well as in Alaska. Ten southern States pay this tribute to General R. E. Lee, the military leader of'the Confederacy, and nine to Jefferson Davis, its political head. Alabama suspends business activities on the birthday of Thomas Jefferson, South Carolina on that of Woodrow Wilson, and Tennessee on that of General Bedford Forrest, a cavalry commander in the Civil War. Columbus Day, observed on October 12 in 34 States, commemorates not the birthday of the explorer, hut day on which he sighted the New World.
