A FAMOUS LIBRARY Approval was given “ in congregation ” at Oxford last month to a decree by which the curators of the University Chest are authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £390,000 on the ex- | tension of the Bodleian Library. Mr A. H. Smith, Fellow of New_ College, I in introducing the decree, pointed out that the original estimate was £406,000. In course of planning the building it was found that very big expense would be entailed in its upkeep, and at any early stage it was thought desirable that I £30,000 should be transferred from the (building fund to the endowment fund, thus reducing the original estimate to £371,000. They had not been able to keep within this figure, however, and another £19,000 would be required. It 1 was also revealed that the estimated cost of repairing the Sheldonian Theatre following the ravages of death watch beetles, would be £B,OOO.
