BISCUIT AND CONFECTIONERY SETTLEMENT [Pee United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, February 18. In the Conciliation Council complete agreement was reached in the Dominion Biscuit and Confectionery Employees’ industrial dispute. The following minimum weekly rates of wages were finally agreed on: — Workers in charge of departments who have served not less than five years in the trade, £5 7s Gd; first assistant or leading hands in charge of not less than three adult male workers, £-1 17s 6d; man operating bean-roaster, chocolate mixer, chocolate machine moulder, operator of chocolate enrobor’s pan, operator when operating not less than four revolving pans, man working vacuum cooker, man working off sugar boilings, bakehouse machinist in charge of biscuit cutting and embossing machine, brakesman marzipan and paste maker, liquorice boiler, cream and syrup boiler and oven attendant responsible for baking biscuits in travelling ovens, each £4 7s 6cl; general hands, £4 .‘ls. The departments recognised in the award were biscuit, chocolate, and confectionery. Wages for youths under 21 years were fixed as follow First six months. £1 2s 6d and rising by 4s increases at the end of each six-monthly period until during the fifth six months the wage shall be £1 18s Gd a week; for the sixth six months the wage is £2, with £2 7s Gd for the fourth year, and £3 2s 6d for the fifth year; thereafter the wage to be not less than the minimum rate for general hands. Six-monthly increases of 4s per week- were also fixed for female workers, the starting rate being 17s Gd, and rising regularly to £1 17s Gd for the first six mouths. For the seventh six months the wages were fixed at £2; £2 Is for the eighth six months, and thereafter not less than £2 4s. The new rates of wages will he paid from March 1, and the award will continue in force until June 30, 1938. ENGINE DRIVERS’ HOURS AND WAGES. WELLINGTON, February 18. At to-day’s hearing of the engine drivers’ dispute by the Conciliation Council agreement was reached on the questions of wages and hours. It was agreed that the statutory holidays for factory workers would -he in accordance with the Factories Act, and that other workers would observe the conditions in the establishment where they were employed. Men regularly employed on shift work are to have two weeks holiday a year on full_ pay, and others one week. Ensine drivers requiring a first class certificate are to bo paid £5 5s a week workers with a second class certificate £5, and uncertified workers £4 15s. All are to receive 14 days’ holiday a year on full pay. Two shillings a day is to be allowed for getting up steam. Special rates for county council employees ranged from £1 Is a day for drivers of traction engines and steam road ro’lers, to 18s Gd a day for winch drivers.
