LAKE OF FIRE IN STREET
PETROL BLAZE AFTER COLLISION A lake of blazing petrol flooded, a Bristol street when two, large lorries collided at a road junction at Barnton Hill. • The bumpers of a steam wagon pierced the petrol tank of a motor lorry carrying sand and gravel. The vehicles were locked together, and as petrol flowed from the damaged tank, it was set on fire by the flames from the wagon. Drivers and their mates jumped clear before their vehicles became .surrounded by blazing petrol. Mr W. Maggs, a shopkeeper" of Avondale Road, entered a telephone box to call the fire brigade, and while he was there the booth was surrounded by burning spirit, which marooned him for some minutes until the arrival of the firemen. The drivel's, assisted by passers-by, built barricades with sand from the lorry to prevent the flames spreading. The outbreak was quickly extinguished by the fire brigade.
