AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINES
BITTER CRITICISM OF TREATMENT ALLEGED OUTRAGES BY POLICE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, February 17. (Received February ]B, at noon.) Bitter criticism of Australia’s treatment of the aborigines was voiced by the Rev. Lofroy, former secretary of the Australian Board of Missions, at a conference of the British Commonwealth League, held to consider aboriginal problems. “ Outrages, which shocked the Australian public, were committed by the police in Central and North Australia.” he said. '“ln one case it was admitted that from 50 to 60 natives were sacrificed to avenge the death of one white. It is safe to say that in some places no white jury will convict a white for an offence against a native. It is a matter for "general congratulations that the Federal Government now seems willing to adopt reforms.” The conference passed a resolution congratulating the Government for its new policy, but adding, at the instance of the Rev. Lefroy, “ it suggests that the Government should keep a strict watch on the administration of justice and work of the police.”
