Continuing the history of cricket in Otago, to-day's article deals with the period from 1914 to 1922, during which, jf course, the Great War intervened. A New Zealand team visited Australia during the 1914 season, B. I'ucikwell being the only Otago representative seelcted to travel. VISIT FROM SIM’S TEAM. Jn March of this year Sim’s Australian eleven visited the Dominion, the first test match taking place in Dunedin. Australia won by seven wickets. The visiting team included C. K. Dolling, W. M‘Gregor, H. L. Collins, A. A. Mailey, M. A. Noble, W. Armstrong, V. Trumpet', J. N. Crawford, E. 1,. Waddy, H. C. M'Kenzie, L. A. Cody, E. Laver, and V. Hansford. The thirty-ninth annual meeting was held in the secretary’s board room on Friday, September 28, 1914. Mr J. .). Clark was again elected president, Messrs T. Ritchie, A. Martini C. Morris, and A. H. Fisher vice-presidents, Mr E. S. Wilson secretary and treasurer, Mr J. N; Crawford assitant secretary, and the committee comprised Mesrs G. A. Wycherley, D. H. Thomson, A. M'Hutcheon, A. Restieaux, A. Nelson, G. A. Nelson, J. Haig, F. Williams, A. Graham, J. Ramsden, and R. Stevens, representing the Wednesday Association, and IV. Best, the ground members. A colts’ team, under J. N. Crawford, was arranged for this season, during which the Oval again became available for cricket. Shield winners were: First grade, Colts, with an unbeaten record ■ second grade, Mornington; third grade, Morniugton. WAR-TIME GAMES. Otago met Canterbury at Lancaster Park at Christmas, 1914, and were defeated by an innings and 86 runs. Otago scored 108 and 84 (Burges 44 not out, J. N. Crawford 22 and 10, J. Shepherd 19). D. Reese (four for 22 and one for 14), Bennett (four for 28), and Hickmott (two for 7 and four for 5) secured the wickets. Canterbury totalled 278 (Bishop 34, Hickmott 38, Patrcilk 27, C. Beale 58 not out, Sandman 22). J. N. Crawford obtained six for 67, Ramsden two for 29, and Siedeberg two for 55. BIG SCORING GAME. Otago played Wellington at New Year, the match resulting in a drawn game. Wellington scored 498 (F. Midlane 222, Bray 82, Brice 68, Baker 28, Robinson 23, Paterson 21). J. N. Crawford secured five for 149, Watson three for 13, and Siedeberg two for 85. Otago went in and made 139 and 428 for seven wickets—J. N. Crawford 178 not out, Burges 36 and 67, Eckhold 60 not out, Siedeberg 19, Shepherd 17. Wellington’s most successful howlers were Robinson (three for) 31 and three for 101), Brice (four for 19 and two for 33). At Easter a match was played against Southland which resulted in a drawn game, Southland scoring 226 and 152. A. Poole put together scores of 77 and 38. Hamilton 25, J. A. Doig 29, Cockroft 18 not out and 16, Kenmitz 25, Kavanagh 25, and Gilbertson 26. Crawford (five for 60 and four for 49), Ramsden (four for 63 and one for 34), and Given (three for 32) were Otago’s most useful bowlers. Otago made 212 and 60 for three wickets, J. N. Crawford reaching 50, A. Galland 43; and Westbrook 39 and 35 not out. J. A. Doig (three for 74), Bannerman (three for 81), and E. Kavanagh (two for 19 and three for 29) bowled well for Southland. At the fortieth annual meeting of the association on Saturday, September 25, 1915, in the secretary’s board room, the president, vice-presidents, and secretary and treasurer were all re-elected, and the commitete elected consisted of Messrs A. Graham, J. Ramsden, A. M'Hutcheon, G. A. Wycherley, J. Haig, A. Restieaux. F. Williams, A. Nelson, C. Todd, and P. Stevens. CRAWFORD’S AGREEMENT TERMINATED. J. N. Crawford’s agreement terminated owing to the war. No competition matches were held, but friendly games were played between clubs. H. C. Watson, caretaker of Carisbrook, left for Christchurch during this season. The same executive officers were appointed at the forty-first annual meeting in the secretary’s board room on Saturday, October 7, 1916, and the election of committee resulted jn the following being appointed:—Messrs J. Ramsden, G. A. Wycherley, W. Rowland, L. Sanderson, C, Todd, J. Haig, A. Restieaux, A. Nelson, G. B. Smith, C. H. Wilson, and A. Melville. Competition matches were played during this season, Grange winning the first and third grades, Albion the second grade. The forty-second annual meeting was held in the secretary’s board room on Saturday, October 6, 1917, Mr J. J. Clark again being returned as president. The vice-presidents and secretary and treasurer were all re-elected, and the committee consisted of Messrs J. Ramsden, L. Edwards, J. M'Mullan, G. A. Wycherley, J. Haig, A. Restieaux, J. R,* M‘Connachie, A. Keast, J. Nisbet, and C. B. Smith. Otago were defeated at Christchurch at Christmas, 1917, by five wickets. Otago scored 171 and 104 (Patrick 94 and 38. Holden 15, Alloo 17, Conradi 17)- Reade (three for 53 and two for 35), Blunt (two for 17 and four for 60), and Thomas (three for 35 and three for 2) shared the wickets. Canterbury scored 171 and 110 for five wickets (Blunt 17, Allardyce 39. Booth 31, Gray 20, Reade 34 not out). M'Beth (six for 52 and three for 50), Livingston (two for 71 and two for 40), and Patrick (two for 17) were the most successful bowlers.

The forty-third annual meeting was held in the secretary’s board room on Saturday, October 12, 1918, Mr J. J. Clark being returned as president. Messrs G. A. Martin, T. Ritchie, A. H. Fisher, and C. Morris wore elected vicepresidents, Mr E. S. Wilson secretary and treasurer, and the committee consisted of Messrs G. A. Wycherley, L. Edwards, Dunn, C. Todd, J. Ramsden, 0. B. Smith, W. A. Rowland, W. Haig, A. Restieaux, and Sir C. Moon.

Otago met Southland in March, 1918, scoring 313 (M'Mullan 157 not out, Galland 47, Holden 20, Dickcl 38).

Doig took- four for 132 and Poole four for 104. Southland scored 1-19 and 108 (G’.eeson 55 and 21, Poole 22. Gilbert-, son 21, and Driscoll 36). Otago's bowlers were Hay (eight for 70 and four for 48), Livingston (one for 25 and four for 33).

A drawn game resulted when Otago met Canterbury at New Year. 1919, Otago scoring 266 (Holden 25, Brinsley 77. A. W. Alloo 81). Pengelly, with six for 70, was Canterbury’s best bowler. Canterbury replied with 272 (Wiiitta 123 not out. Martin 39). Alloo took four for 68 ami Feast two for 44.

Mornington won the first grade competition, Grange the second, ami Overseas Club the third. Mr G. A. Martin became.president at the forty-fourth annual meeting in the secretary’s hoard room on October 26, 1919. Messrs A. H. Fisher, C. Morris, J. Clark, and C. Todd were the vicepresidents, Mr E. S. Wilson secretary ami treasurer, the committee comprising Messrs G. A. "Wycherley, L. Edwards, J. Hav, 4. Haig, A. Restieaux, L. .1. -loci, AY. Kitt, J. Ramsden, A. Galland, C. B. Smith, and AA T . A. Rowland. LOW SCORING. A match was played against Southland at Christmas, 1919, Otago winning by an innings and 47 runs. Otago scored 144 (Westbrook 40, Chadwick 28), M‘Beth (seven for 59) bowling well. Southland were tlisposed of for 65 and 42, M'Beth (12), A. Hamilton (10), and J. Dixon (13) being the only double-figure scorers. Torrance (seven for 21 and four for 20), Bceby (three for 16), and Alloo (six for 20) bowled witli great success. At New Year, 1920, Otago defeated Wellington by 153 runs. Otago scored 268 and 288 (Eckhold 23 and 33, M'Mullan 85 not. out and 25, A. AV. Alloo 35 and 26, C. Alloo 34, A. Galland 30 and 17, F. Hutchison 85, R. C. Torrance 26, and AV. Beeby 29). S. Brice (five for 65 and six for 63) bowled most impressively. AVellington made 164 and 236 (AV. A. Baker 14 and 71, Condliffe 39, G. Baker 33, Hutchings 41, S. Brice 60, E. Sanyrko 10 and 29). A. AV., Alloo (six for 63 and four for 86) and R. C. Torrance (throe for 78 and one for 53) were Otago’s best bowlers. Canterbury beat Otago by 10 wickets at Hagley Park on February 20, 21, and 23, 1920, Otago’s tallies being 130 and 145, A. Galland (34) being the highest scorer. R. Read (five for 44 and two tor 35), M'Ewin (two for 14), and D. Reese (two for 12 and two for 23) took the wickets. Canterbury scored 236 and 41 I'Sr no wickets, the highest scorers being Brosnan (73) and Thomas (55). Torrance (six tor 85), Alloo (two for 62), and Macfarlane (two for 39) secured the wickets for Otago. Southland secured a four-wickets’ win over Otago at Invercargill on March 17 and 18, 1920. Otago scored 180 and 50 (Galland 71 and Lomas 39). D. M'Beth took 11 wickets in this game and J. A. Doig eight, both bowling exceedingly well. Southland reached 179 and 52 for six wickets— Kavanagh 33, D. Hamilton 24, D. M'Beth 32 and 28, J. Doig 27. and A Hamilton 17. R. C. Torrance claimed five for 76 and two for 33, Alloo three for 63 and three for 14, and Conradi two for 21. Mr Crosby Morris became president of the association at the forty-fifth annual meeting, held in the secretary’s board room, on Monday, September 27, 1920, and thus was honoured another staunch supporter of the game. Messrs G. A. Martin, J. J. Clarik, L. J. Joel, and C. Todd were elected vice-presi-dents, Mr E. S. AVilson secretary and treasurer, and the committee consisted of Messrs J. A. Robson, L. Casey, W. A. Rowland, A. Galland, A. Restieaux, G. A. AVycherley, A. W. Alloo, J. Haig, F. N. Binney, and E. A. Nichol.

Otago met Canterbury at Carisbrook on February 18, 19, and 21, 1921, and won by 94 runs. Otago scored 138 and 308, W. Higgins C 7, A. W. Alloo 35 and 13, T. Carlton 33, A. Gallaud 22, and J. Shepherd 146, being the chief contributors. 11. Reade (three for 71 and four for 133), D. Sandman (seven for 30), and D. Reese (five for 33), were the best bowlers. Canterbury scored 147 and 205, Patrick (58 and 50), and Page (38) being the chief scorers. T. Carlton (five for 39 and five for 70), was Otago’s best bowler. In March, 1921, a game was played against an Australian eleven,, Otago being defeated by an innings. Otago made 127 and 88, J. Shepherd (24 and 38), J. M'Mullan (21), C. Alio (25), and L. Casey (25 not out), batting well. P. Hornibrook (two for 26 and four for 42), Liddicut (three for 21), Asher (three for 33), and Ironmonger (six for 34), were the most successful bowlers. Australia scored 226 (Dr Bogle 69, Lampard 50, Kippax 29, Hansford 35. Torrance took five for 68, and Carlton three for 40. Australia gave an exhibition subsequently and were disposed of for 139, V. Richardson (52), Liddicut (34), being top scorers. Torrance (four for 88), and Carlton (five for 28), collected the wickets. Mr Crosby Morris was re-elected president at the forty-sixth annual meeting in the secretary’s board room on Wednesday, September 27, 1921. Messrs G. A. Martin, C. Todd, L. J. Joel, and J. J. Clark were elected vicepresidents, and Mr E. S. Wilson secretary and treasurer. The committee comprised Messrs J. A. Robson, J. Ramsden, G. A. Wycherley, A. Galland, A. W. Alloo, F. N. Binuey, W. A. Rowland, A. Restieaux, J. Meikle, W. G. Mcnzies, and G. R. Ritchie. During the year the association’s funds were augmented by £l2l from an art union, and £57 from a dance recital given by Mrs Keates. In the Canterbury game at Lancaster Park Otago were defeated by four wickets, scoring 221 and 283 (j. Shepherd 48 and 84, Siedeberg 20 and 28 not out, Eckhold 24, M'Mullan 39 and 18, Galland 17 and 64, Carlton 12 and 20, and Westbrook 14 and 37. Reade took five for 70, Sandman three for 58, and four for 60. Canterbury scored 307 and 201 for six wickets, the principal scorers being Worker 44 and 13, Blunt 40 and 32, Brosnahan 43, Grant 78, Patrick 19 and 68, Evans 32, Casey (four for 74 and two for 34), and Carlton (three for 83 and three for 82), were Otago’s best bowlers.

The match with Auckland was played at Eden Park on December 31, 1921, January 2 and 3, 1922. Auckland winning by 198 runs. Auckland scored 298 (Hcmus 51, S. G. Smith.so, Anthony 43, M'Lcod 56, and Garrard 25). Dickinson'took live for 41 and T. Carlton three for 90. Otago reached 154 in tho first innings, T. Carlton 28, Westbrook 20, M'Mullan 20, Torrance 17, Shepherd 15, and Casey 14 all gettting into double figures. Snedden (four for 52), Garrard (three for 35), and Allcott (two for 34), secured the wickets. Auckland’s second innings realised 178 (Snedden 37, Anthony 34, Allcott 39). Tho wickets were taken by Dickinson (three for 39), Casey (four for 54), and Torrance (two for 29). Otago made 124 in tho second innings, J. Shepherd 43, and A. Galland 41, being the only Otago batsmen to reach double figures. Garrard (four for 24), and Allcott (three for 30), both bowled excellently. The Wellington match was played at the Basin Reserve. AA'ckington, on .January 6 and 7, 1922, the homo team beating Otago by ten wickets. Otago made 209 in their first innings (J. Shepherd l 61). M'Girr (four for 80) and Barclay (six for 65) collected the wickets. YYellington compiled 272 (Hiddleston 118, Burton 49, and Dempster 33). T. Carlton (four for 73), Shepherd (three for 19), and Torrance (two for 54) were Otago’s best bowlers. Otago’s second innings realised 188, M'Mullan top-scoring with 34. M'Girr (two for 58), Henderson (three for 34), and Barclay (four for 49)_ were the destructive agents. A match against Southland was played during the Christmas holidays, Otago winning by 120 runs. Otago made 131 and 124 for six (declared). R. Cherry made 47, H. Duncan 36 and 23, A. Galland 42, and W. Brinsley 19. For Southland Kavanagh took five for 31 and Poole three for 24. Southland were disposed of for 56 and 79, D. M'Beth taking eight for 24 and five for 29 and Conradi two for 5 and five for 30.

Carisbrook was the venue of the Auckland game at New Year, Otago being defeated by 79 rune. Auckland’s first innings realised 216 (G. Cummings 90. H. Burton 20, A. Anthony 24, W. Garard 27). D. M'Beth took six for 112 and J. R. Dickinson two for 36.
