MAGISTRATE'S COURT The weekly sitting of the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court was continued yesterday, before Mr H. Morgan, S.M. Judgment by default was 'given for plaintiff in the following civil undefended case ;—Waitaki Hospital Board v. Edward M'Grath, £lB 19s; costs, £3 18s. OVERSEAS SHIPPING The overseas vessel Surrey will load at Oamaru for west coast of England ports on March 4. Her allotment is 11,000 freight carcasses of mutton. The Kumara will load on March 27 24,000 freight carcasses of mutton and general cargo for London. MEETING OF SWIMMING CLUB At a meeting of the Oamaru Amateur Swimming Club the president (Mr M. K. M'Culloch) presided. It was decided to hold the M'Culloch Cup races on March 9, between teams from the Waitaki High School and St. Kevin’s College, the events being a 200yds relay and a 100yds free style. The Herbert Smith Cup, for junior schools, will be held on the same evening. It was decided to hold the dub’s annual dinner on March 18. The second competition ' for a series of three handicap dives each was held under unfavourable conditions. Results were as follow: —K. Gemmell 1, Miss D. Crawshaw 2. S. Miller 3. FUNCTION AT HERBERT A very pleasant evening was held in the Herbert Hall recently in honour of Mr and Mrs J. Kirkwood and Miss Mabel Kirkwood, who are leaving the district for Balclutha. The hall, was well filled, and a happy time was spent in games and dancing,. Mr Christopher gave humorous items, accompanied by Miss Hutton at the piano, and recitations were given by Mr Warren. The presentation of a substantial sum of money to Mr and Mrs Kirkwood and a xylonite toilet set to Miss Kirkwood was made by Mr J. Rodman, who referred to the willingness of the guests to assist in anything for the good of the district, and stated that they would be much missed by a large circle of friends. Mr A. Campbell spbke on behalf of the Picnic Club, Dr Trotter for the School Committee, Mr M Eacheran for the Railways Department. Mr E H Ross for the Reunion Committee, and the Rev. E. E. Andrews for the' Presbyterian Church. After musical honours for the guests, Mr Kirkwood replied on behalf of himself, his wife, and daughter. NORTH OTAGO POULTRY PRODUCERS A large number of delegates, including two from the newly-formed branch at Waimate. attended the annual meeting of the Oamaru District Council of the New Zealand Poultry Producers Federation. The president (Mr 1Gill) was in the chair, and he extended a warm welcome to the visiting memPresident stated that represeiitatives from the council had visited _Waimate the previous week and had- received a hearty welcome. A very live branch was set up, and he. felt sure it would make good, as Waimate was the second largest producing area in the Canter bury-Westland district. Cutler (Waimate) be tho third representative. -—Remits to Conference. —■ The following remits were approved: —That the mouthpiece of the poultry industry be a national executive; hat the imposition on bran and pollard be abolished. It was agreed to recommend that the Poultry Board be asked again to contribute £lO towards the expenses of the branch delegates attending the annual conference. Mr D. Christie suggested that it; oe> a recommendation to the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. W. Lee Martin) that the Government’s marketing plan be submitted to the district councils at least a fortnight before the national conference, and that tjie nspport of other councils be sought for this recommendation.—Apprived. It was decided to recommend that the price of eggs for the week be fixed every Monday. PERSONAL The death has occurred of Mr Williamson Jamieson, of Oamaru, in his sixty-third year. The deceased gentleman was born in County Antrim, Ireland, and came to New Zealand with his parents at the age of 18 months. The ship was the Tiniaru, and tho family landed at Port Chalmers. Coining to Oamaru, Dir Jamieson was educated at the South School, and later on learned at Robins and Sons. He spent 30 years in the North Island, returning to Oamaru in 1919. Here he established a joinery factory in Tees street, but several years later he joined the staff of M'Callum and Co. Mr Jamieson was a member of the Meadowhank Bowling Club for 17 years, and was a member of the Kilwinning Lodge. He leaves a widow and one daughter, Miss Gladys Jamieson. INDUCTION AT HAMPDEN CHURCH The induction of the Rev. A. R. Chisholm in the Hampden Presbyterian Church was conducted by the Oamaru Presbytery last week. The Moderator of the Presbytery. (Rev. J. Badoock) conducted the service, and. the Rev. H. Barton preached the occasional sermon. Mr Badcock addressed the minister, and the Rev. H. 0. Bowman the congregation, the latter referring to the need for close and affectionate relationship between the people and the minister. \ welcome social ,to Mr and Mrs Chisholm and family was held after tho induction service, and the interimmoderator of the charge (Rev. E. E. Andrews) presided over a large gathering, representative of every social interest in the surrounding district. Speeches of welcome were made by the Revs. Andrews, Barton, Badcock, Bow-

man, A. W. Stace (Anglican), and Messrs Johnson, Austing, Walker, Mrs D. J. Ross, and Miss Dunbar, to which Mr Chisholm suitably replied. During the evening enjoyable items were rendered by Messrs J. D. M‘Kechnie. N. F. Sansom, Miss Barbara Henderson, and the church choir. Mr Ansting and Miss Anderson played the accompaniments. The interim-moderator’s services were recognised by the gift of a cheque, which, Mr Ross remarked, could not be expressive of the valuable service rendered by the Rev. Andrews during tho vacancy. The Rev. Mr Chisholm, is the successor of the Rev. J. Harkness, who retired from the ministry in November, 1936, after having rendered loyal service to the church in several districts for a good many years. PLUNKET SOCIETY The monthly meeting of the Oamaru branch of the Plunket Society was attended by Mesdames Muttrp (chair), Cooney, Edwards, Clark, Murray, Williams (Oamaru), Gardiner, Ruddenklau (Tokarahi), J. M'Millan, A. M'Millan (Herbert), Harvey (Weston), and M'lnnes (Kurow). The Treasurer reported that the finances were in a healthy condition, and it was decided, with the approval of tho Borough Council, to hold a street collection on March 5. The sum of £129 10s was received from the North Otago Rugby Union, being the society’s share of the proceeds in the recent queen carnival art union. The town nurse reported as follows ; December: Visits paid to office, adults 66, babies 50, older children 1 10, total, 126; visits to homes, 129; new cases for, the month,- 7; breast-fed, 4; artificially fed, 2; .partially breast-fed, 1.
