INTERPROVINCIAL EIGHTS

SOUTHLAND'S 100 YARDS WIN For the first time in its history the South Island championship regatta, held annually at Port Chalmers, bad to be cancelled on Saturday. Bad weather caused all events to be put otf, with the exception of the.interpreting cial rowing race between Otago and Southland for the Edmond Challenge Shield and a speed boat contest for the Sir Henry Seagrave Memorial Cup, these two events being rowed yesterday morning. Although considerably better, than Saturday, the conditions at Port Chalmers were not the best for rowing, the water being so choppy that the Otago crew had to empty its boat halfway along the two-mlle course, giying Southland an opportunity to obtain a lead of about 300yds. The local crew emptied its boat in remarkably fast time, hut could not catch the Maroons, who went on to win by 100yds. This makes Southland’s seventeenth win, as compared with Otago’s eight. L. Morrison replaced F. Te Koeti as No. 4 in the Southland boat, the latter man being unable to travel. Result:—* Southland—G. Barton (stroke), A. Cuff (7), J. Hogan (6), F. Lind- . quist ‘ (5), E. Morrison (4), J. Kepple (3), S. Eade H. Tweedie (bow), and C. Ward (cox) I Otago—J. P. Vallis (stroke), J. Solomon (7), E. Clark (6), C. L. C. Johnson (5), P. Verngreen (4), L. Pithie (3), W. N. Binme (2), G. Thorn (bow), and R. Underwood (cox) .... f Otago drffw the outside position, and both crews got away to a good start, keeping level for the first 50yds, As they crossed the channel, heading for the shelter of a sand bank and calmer water, Underwood’s knowledge of the harbour gave Otago a slight lead, which was maintained until the end of the half-mile. Southland was stroking 31 to the minute, compared with Otago’s 30, but the latter crew kept increasing its lead, although very slowly. At the end of the first mile it was apparent that some mishap had occurred to the local crew, and the Maroons gained with everv stroke, Otago still rowing until Southland was a length and ahalf in front. Vallis (the Otago stroke) 1 then ordered his men out, and the boat was emptied on the side of the sand bank. Southland, rowing at an even 30 a minute, had increased the lead to 300vds, and although Otago worked hard at the end of the one and a-half miles it was still some 250yds behind. Southland crossed the line with 100 yd« to spare. SPEED-BOAT EVENTS Carrying a handicap of 3min 40seo, Pelorous Jack, the Masport Cup wintier, was defeated by Miss Victory m the race for the Sir Henry Seagrave Memorial Cup. These boats were the only competitors. The race was held over a five-mile triangular course, and although Miss Victory had a large Handicap Pelorus Jack crossed - the line only three seconds later. The time established by Pelorous Jack was 4mm 45see. The trophy goes to the boat that registered the fastest time.. Pelorus Jack was unable to finish the course because of rough water in the race for the Sell Memorial Cup, which was won by the only other competitor, Miss Victory. Pelorus Jack was a visitor from Picton, being owned by Messrs S. Buckman and C. Ollson, while Miss Victor/ belongs to Mr W. Sell,
