CYCLING

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS R. SIVERSTEN'S GOOD PERFORMANCE The Otago track cycling championships were held in wintry weathei a the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon before an attendance ot aboiu 200. Although the programme was marred by some heavy showers the spectators were treated to some excellent racing. The feature of the championship events was the fine performance of the Dunedin Club member, I R. A. Sivertsen. He won the quarter-mile sprint event in fine style, and was run-ner-up in the time trial championship after a tie had necessitated a nde-ott. He trains the Dunedin Amateur Cycling Club's cup -for having gained most points in senior events, Ids total being eight. G. Homer was the next best performer, being riinner-np in both the quarter-mile and five-mile championships. W. Chalmers secured the most spectacular win of the day, as. alter lying in a good position throughout the fivemile event, he made a brilliant sprint to he the most popular winner of the day. W. Frame, of Invercargill, who won all three titles two years ago, gained the time trial title. In this event each competitor rides the distance by himself, the rider putting up the fastest time gaining the title. The conditions suited Frame, who was able to use his great strength in riding against the strong wind. The one-mile junior event was noted for the easy win by R. Muir, .of Invercargill. Muir made the pace over the last two laps and still none of the local riders was able to heat him in the sprint. Although the Invercargill and Dunedin clubs collected two titles each the riders from the latter were definitely superior on the day, taking five of the six placings in senior events. The senior riders showed the effects of the championship events by being unable to catch the front-markers in the handicap race, which proved to be a popular win for the junior, J. APConnell. Small entries were received for the running events, the 220yds handicap proving to be the best contested race, the much improved runner J. APLachlan winning by a narrow margin. Although the rain interfered with the running of the programme the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association is to be complimented on running the large programme through efficiently.
