Cricket in Otago

RETROSPECTIVE SURVEY OF GAME’S DEVELOPMENT Review of Period from 1884 to igo6

In this, the second of the series of articles on the history of Otago cricket, a survey of the game is made from the period in the middle ’eighties up to the early part of the present century.

Otago scored 101 and 121 for nine wickets (C. Beck 32, A. G. Bell 25, .7. Baker 45 not out, and J. Croxford 11 not out). This was Arthur Fisher’s first game for Otago, and he started his career with a pair, being not out in the first innings, however. Later he was to prove one of the best bowlers in New Zealand, and a good batsman also. Canterbury scored 101 and 120 (A. Harman 11 and 37, H Demaus 27 and 45 not out, Ogier 25 not out). Canterbury’s most successful bowlers were Wilding (four for 24), Hannan (three for 20 and one for 29), Demaus (one for 3 and two for 17). For Otago Lawton (four for 41 and six for 30), Downes (four for 44 and none for 8), Fisher (two for 64), Parker (two for 15 and two for 18) bowled well. Mr Mark Cohen was elected president at the ninth annual meeting of the association on September 22, 1884, and Mr F. Horne secretary and treasurer. The senior clubs were: Albion, Carisbrook. Excelsior, Kaikorai, Phoenix, Rovers, Roslyn, Taieri, and ’Warehousemen. . The annual match against Canterbury was played at Hagley Park in December, 1884, and resulted in a win for Canterbury by nine wickets. Otago scored 13l‘ and 62 (T. L. Austin 36 and 2, E. T. Collinson 35 and 0, C. W. Rattray 5 and 14, J. M ‘Gregor 30 not out and 12). Canterbury made 170 and 25 for one wicket. \Y. J. Cotterill made 74 not out, E. J. Cotterill 19, F. Wilding 19, J. Fowke 14, and C. Strange 13. The principal bowlers were Dunlop (four for 62 and live for 26) and Welding (five for 33 and three for 10). Cooke (nine for 67) bowled best for Otago. An Auckland team visited Dunedin and defeated Otago by five wickets. Otago scoring 141 and 35 to Auckland’s 83 and 95 for five. The chief contributors to Otago’s total were W. Parker 45. A. Grieve 31, A. Fairbairn 13. AFGregor 14, C. W r . Rattray 13, and J. J. Mallard 18. Auckland’s highest scorers were W. Barton 16, C. S. Stafford 21, S, Coxon 21, and D. Lynch 20. Stafford (five for 21). Lynch (six for 17), and Meldrum (four for 15) were the best bowlers for Auckland, and the most successful _ trundlers for Otago were Fitzgerald (sis for 51) and Frith (three for 29). A return match against Canterbury was played in Dunedin in February, and resulted in a win for Otago by two wickets, Otago scoring 171 and 129 for e : >'ht wickets to Canterbury’s 164 and 132. The main run-getters for Otago were W. Parker 7 and 54 not out, 11. R. Boddington 46, E. T. Collinson 13, C. Beck 48, W T . G. Dixon 20 and 26, T. LAustin 10 and 16. and J. AFGregor 18. Canterbury scored 164 and 132 (W. V. Milton 57. W. J. Cotterill 41. D. Dunlop 23 and 22 not out, F. Wilding 23, E. P. Barnes 19, A. T. Washer 31). T. L. Austin (nine for 103) and C. Frith (seven for 86) were Otago’s best trundlers). At the tenth annual meeting on Septemlser 13. 1885. at which Mr .1. P. Spring was elected president and Air F. Horne secretary and treasurer, a discussion took place protesting against the agreement entered into with the Carisbrook Ground Company to play all important fixtures at Carisbrook. which had resulted in loss to the association owing to the public not attending matches at Carisbrook and being able to see matches from the hill. It was considered that the Caledonian and Oval grounds were better propositions. J. HOPE’S FIRST APPEARANCE. The annual match against Canterbury was played in Dunedin. Canterbury winning by 81 runs. Otago scored 136 and 101 (L. M. Harris 19. W. Carson 13, C. Beck 14. E. T. ‘Collinson 59. W. G. Dixon 10, T. L. Austin 17, and J. Hope 11) Canterbury made 204 and 114. E. J. Cotterill put together 75, W. V. Milton 14 and 16, W. .1. Cotterill 15 and 11, W. J. Crawshaw 22 and 18. and J. Fowke 26; while Dunlop (two for 47 and five for 36), Wilding (four for 37 and five for 41), and Raynor (four for 37) shared the wickets for Canterbury. Otago’s best bowlers were C. Frith (seven for 120), T, L. Austin (throe for 69), Carson (throe for 22), and J. Hope (two for 21). This appears to have been 3. Hope's first appearance for Otago, for whom he was to do such great work in the years to follow. At the eleventh annual meeting on September 25, 1886, Air J. P. Alaitland was elected president and Air F. S. Horne secretary and treasurer. AUSTRALIAN TEAM’S VISIT. A visit was received from an Australian team this season, the match being played at Carisbrook on November 22 . 23 , 24. 1886. The Otago twentytwo scored 63 and 1-58. the principal contributors being W. V. Vallango IS and 12, W. G. Dixon 10. .1. Walls 23, A. Kitt 24, A. Grieve 33, and C. Beck 10. J. Baker made his first appearance in this match. Australia scored 60 and 162 for four wickets, the chief scorers being S. P. Jones 45,'G. L. Palmer 10, W. Bruce 10 and 32. A. H. Jarvis 20, and J. W. Trumble 30 and 52. The most successful howlers for Otago were Hewitt (four for 48), C. Frith (four for 78), and J. Hope (two for 22) ; and wicket-takers for Australia were Evans (26. for 62). Trumble (four for 28), Palmer (three for-32), and Bruce (six for 17). The annual match against Canterbury w-as played at Lancaster Park, and resulted in a win for Canterbury by 10 wickets, Otago scoring 80 and 147. Valiangp made 21, F." Harper 12 J. Walls 20, A. Kitt 17, J. Hope 24. W. Carson 36, T. D. Kingsland 18 and 22. Canterbury responded with 218 and 11 for no wickets. W. J. Crawshaw 25, W. .7. Cotterill 26, E. C. Cotterill 36, C. W.-Garrard 24. and G Raynor 49 not out batted well ; while Garty took six for 41 and one for 29, Cuff one for 11 and three for_ 22, Dunlop one for 25 and five for 57 secured the wickets for Canetrbnry. The twelfth annual meeting was held on Saturday, October 1. 7837, Dr Couglitrsy being elected president and Air W. J. Aloore secretary and treasurer. The senior clubs for the previous season_ were; Phoenix, Warehousemen, Carisbrook A and B, Wanderers, Southern, Excelsior, Norf - Dunedin, Grange, Waverley, Albion, Roslyn, High School. The Phoenix were the premiers. DOWNES BEGINS WELL. The annual .match against Canterbury was played in Dunedin, ant! resulted in a win for Otago by 703 runs. Otago scored 97 and 767/ W. Parker 27. F. Harper 64 and 74, L. Af. Harris 32, C. Beck 12. A. Grieve .11. G. Raj nor 17 and 33. W. Carson 14, and R. (5. Niven 16 were the chief contributors to Otago’s totals. Canterbury were disposed of for 68 and 93 (Dunlop 11 and

17. J. Fowke 16, A. AI. Labatt 17, W. P. Reeves 31, W. P. Studholme 15). Bush (six for 40 and 2 for 19). Dunlop (three for 36 and four for 36), and W. Frith (one for 14 and two for 26) secured the wickets for Canterbury. Carson took five for 26 and six for 51 for Otago, A. Downes five for 34 and none for 20, J. Hope none for 8 and two for 8. This was Alex. Downes’s first match for Otago, and he was the mainstay of tho province’s attack for many years afterwards. ■ The thirteenth annual meeting was held on Saturday, October 13, 7888, Air Alark Cohen being elected president and Air W. J. Aloore secretary and treasurer. The committee comprised Alessrs Malcolm, J. Knox, J. Smyth, Kemlin, J. P. Spring, and C. W. Rattray. The Grange were the premiers for the previous season. OTAGO HEAVILY DEFEATED. The annual match against Canterbury was played in Dunedin, Otago being heavily defeated by an innings and 127 runs. Otago was dismissed for 47 and 200, T. L. Austin and H. R. Boddington 11 each being the only batsmen to reach double figures in Otago’s first innings. In the second' innings W. Parker made,2B, H. R. Boddington 11, F. Harper 69. R. C. Niven 15, D. Claffey 19, Dr Fox 11, and T. L. Austin 21. Canterbury put up the good score of 374. L. A. Cuff 70, R. D. Harman 61, G. Alarshall 30, G. Raymor 29, 11. B. Alathias 36, E. J. Cotforill 45,- W. Frith 31, J. Fowke 14, R. Halley 22 not out all batted well; while Labatt five for 17 and one for 25, Halley four for 29 and one for 43, and Cnff four for 40 were the most successful Canterbury bowlers. Parker four for 56'. Downes three for 90. AFCormick two for 50, and Claffey one for 79 secured the wickets for Otago. The fourteenth annual meeting was held on Monday, September 30, 1889, Mr AI. Cohen being elected president, and Messrs F. Harper and J. P. Spring vice-presidents. Air W. J. Aloore was elected secretary and treasurer, the committee comprising Alessrs J. Knox, Stone, A. Y. Smith, B. Ringer, J. North, and T. Kemplin. The following clubs were affiliated with the associationCarisbrook, Grange. Wanderers. Albion, Warehousemen, High School, Edendale, and Excelsior. A match was played against Auckland at the Caledonian Ground on a bad wicket, resulting in a win for Auckland by eight wickets. Otago scored 62 and 68. Auckland 48 and 83 for two wickets. Rees six for 27 and eight for 36, and Kelly four for 33, bowled well for Auckland, and for Otago A. Downes secured seven for 22. A visit was received from a New South Wales team, and Otago was defeated by an innings and 66 runs, scor ing 36 and 76 (C. Beck 25, W. Parker 19, A. Williams 11. and G. R. Bottomley 10). New South Wales scored 177 (Cowper 31 and Davis 48). Callaway six for 16 and six for 42. AFGlinchy four for 14 and four for 27 proved destructive bowlers. C. Frith five for 51, A. Downes two for 51, Parker two for 12. and Hewat one for 16 secured the wickets for Otago.

Labatt (five for 29 and three for 34), Wilding (five for 42), and Cuff (two for 13) bowled best for Canterbury. Lawton (seven for 28 and two for 30) and A. H. Fisher (ono for 19 and eight for 35) bowled exceptionally well for Otago. The seventeenth annual meeting was held on September 30, 1892, Air James Allen being elected president, Messrs F. Kemplin and F. Harper vice-presi-dents, J. Smyth secretary and treasurer, and flic committee comprised Messrs C. W. Rattray. F. D. Clayton, Findlay, B. Ringer, and L. C. Gooch. Opoho were admitted as a senior club this season. The second Dunedin Cricket Club was admitted as a junior club; Mornington Cricket Club being admitted likewise. The Warehousemen and Dunedin Cricket Club disbanded at the end of the season. Both these teams played on the Oval, which was becoming very swampy. OTAGO’S NORTHERN TOUR. The Otago ieam toured north at the beginning of 7892 and played Hawke's Bay at Napier, 'winning this match by an innings and 02 runs, scoring 7 75 runs while Hawke’s Bay was disposed of for 54 and 59. Ifor Hawke’s Bay C. R. Smith seven for 65 and Lusk two for 18 were the most successful bowlers. For Otago Fislier throe for 2 and three for 16, Lawton four for 27 and four for 25, Hope two for 12 and three for 14, bowled well. Otago defeated Auckland bv eight wickets, scoring 121 and 40 for two wickets, J. C. Lawton 19, W. Johnston 24 and 11, J. Croxford 24, and A. H. Fisher 50. Auckland were disposed of for 78 and 80, Yates 7 6, Aloreshy 75 and 17, R. Neill 14, Jfowke 12. R. Noill five for 53 and one for 16, Miller three for 43,' London two for 1 secured the wickets for Auckland. Lawton four for 42 and five for 2,4. Hope five for 78 and throe for 19 bowled extremely well for Otago. The match against Wellington, Otago lost by six wickets. Otago scored 745 and 100, A. H. Fisher making 38 and 19, A. G. Bell 37 and 10, J. Croxford 23, Sv. Parker 13, W. Johnston 12 and 22, and H. D. Stronach 10. Wellington replied with 158 and 48 for four wickets, C. Cross compiling 67 and 14, A. Blacklock 33 and 34, C. Gore 23. and 7‘7. Fitzsimmons 7 7. W. Frith six for 51 and four for 43, Upham three for 43 ami six for 37 securer! tho wickets for Wellington, and Lawton, three for 41 and four for 33, Jlope five for 68 and none for 16, Harper one for 2 were the most successful bonders for Otago. Tho match against Canterbury was lost by two wickets. Otago scored 114 and 103 (A. H. Fisher 29 and 30, J. C. Lawton 18, J Croxford 16, A. B. Williams 79, C. W. Rattray 10,. and J. Hope 15). Canterbury responded with scores of 141 and 83 for eight wickets, L. A. Cuff making 25, Deinn ns 20, Labatt 37, Wilding 22 and 45, ami J. A. Collins 77. Fisher four for 7 4 and three for 25, Lawton two for 50 and four for 31, Downes two for 37, and Hope two for 38 bowled well for Otago, ns did Palmer three for 22 and five for 32, and Wilding four for 31 and two for 26 for Canterbury. The eighteenth annual meeting of the association was held on September 28, 1893, Air H. AlacNeil being elected

The match against Canterbury was played at Dunedin, and resulted in a win for Otago by eight prickets. Otago scored 116 and 53 for two wickets (C. Heck 24 and 20 not out being the highest, scorer). Canterbury scored 71 and 97. Halley five for 45 and Trcweek three for 17 were Canterbury's most successful bowlers. C. Frith five for 18 and three for 24. A. Downes four for 30 and two for 31, W. Parker one for 12 and five for 31 bowled well for Otago. Bill Johnston appears to have made his first appearance in this match, and was for many years afterwards Otago’s opening batsman with his clubmate, Jim Baker. Tho fifteenth annual meeting was held in October, 7890, Air J. P. Spring being elected president. However, bo resigned during the year, and ATr Jn’lies Wilson was elected, he being at the time a vice-president along with Mr F. Kemplin. Mr W. .7. Aloore was again re-elected secretary and treasurer. The committee comprised Alessr J. Knox, R. G. Stone, H. Boydell, J. Smyth, T. E. Downes, B. Ringer, and T. L. Austin. J. C. Lawton was engaged ns coach during this season, and proved an excellent coach. A THRILLING FINISH. The annual match against Canterbury was played at Christchurch on January 23 and 24, 1891, and proved one of the most exciting games played between the two provinces, Otago winning by one wicket. A great last-wicket partnership between J. Croxford and .dim Baker raised the spectators to a high state of enthusiasm, and when the winning hit was made both batsmen were carried shoulder high off the ground.

The present Dunedin Cricket Club was affiliated to the association during this season, and the following junior clubs were also affiliated: Burnside, Port Chalmers, Ravensbourne, Oceana, and Brewers. J. C. Lawton was reengaged as coach for a further six months.

A visit was received from an Auckland team and Otago was defeated by 13 runs, scoring 149 and 100 (J. Baker 20, J. C. Lawton 52 and 29, A. G. Bell 19, H. Mac Neil 15, H. R. Boddipgton 11, A. H. Fisher 12, A. Downes 11, and W. Johnston 18). Auckland scored 106 and 156 (J. Fowke 30 not out, A. W. Jacobs 12 and 24, W. Lawson 18, I. Mills 88 not out). Auckland’s _ most successful bowlers were R. Neill (five for 48 and five for 38) and Stemsou (two for 37 and three for 31), while Downes (five for 35 and six for 46) and Lawton (four for 26 and three for 49) bowled well for Otago, Downes doing the “hat-trick.”

New Smith Wales met Otago, the match ending in a draw. Otago scored 264 and 114 (J. Baker 24, J. C. Lawton 58, A. E, Clarke 10 and 37. F. Harper 88 and 12, H. R. Boddington 27, A. Downes 48 and 10, A. H. Fisher 39 and 10, and J. Hope 15). New South Wales scored 199 and 75 for five wickets (Cowley 17. M'Kenzie 27 and 13. Walford 14, Gould 43. E. Noble 51, and M. A. Noble 11 not out).

Pearce five for 34 and one for 38, Demaiis two for 24 and three for 22. It was in this match that Alex. Downes fell into disfavour with the crowd by running out T. W. Reese when he was attempting to steal runs whilst Downes was bowling. , The twentieth annual meeting of the association on September 24, 1895, at Wain’s Hotel, re-elected Mr James Smith president, and Messrs C. W. Rattray and A. M'Donald were elected vice-presidents, Mr J. Smyth being re-elected secretary and treasurer. The committee consisted of Messrs J. Baker. F. D. Clayton, L. C. Gooch, W. Mae Lean. B. (linger, T. Ritchie. During the season F. D. Clayton resigned, and T. A. Hunter was appointed to fill the vacancy. The Mornington, Taieri. and University Clubs affiliated with the association this season, Taieri later withdrawing. A Japanese carnival was hold in the Garrison Hall to raise funds for the association. Signor Benzoni arranging the dancing for the carnival, which showed a profit of £132. OTAGO WELL REPRESENTED, New South Wales met Otago at Carisbrook on December 20, 1895, and following da vs, Otago scoring 106 and 121. The chief contributors wore: J. Baker (10 and 15), A. G. Rains (32), W. Johnston (23 and 19), A. H. Fisher (19), A. Downes (31 and 23), and J. Hope (15). S. Callaway (four

eight wickets. Otago scored 93 and 149, J. Baker 34, W. Johnston 32, A. E. Clarke 19, R. Spraggon 29, A. Kinvig 15, G. G. Austin 14 being the chief scorers. Hoare six for 55 and Lewis six for 37 were Queensland’s most successful bowlers. Queensland totalled 174 and 50 for two wickets. Hoare 44 and Lewis 43 were the highest scorers. A. H. Ei slier took nine for 50 and one for 23 for Otago. Another game with Canterbury. was played at Lancaster Park in February, 1897, Otago winning by 146 runs. Otago scored 68 and 290 (J. Baker 11 and 50, Johnston 29, A. Kinvig 44, A. E. Clarke 29, A. H. Fisher 32, A. Downes 17 and 33, F. C. Liggins 21, and R. D. Spraggon 40 not. out). Malone seven for 30 and Wilding five for 67 were Canterbury's best howlers. Canterbury scored 166 and 46, Demans making 75 and 18 and C. R. Clark 40. J. Hope five for 52 and A. H. Fisher seven for 11 bowled exceptionally well for Otago. The following teams became affiliated to the association this season:—Star, Caversham, Hendley, Waverley, lloslyn, and Privateers.

The annual match with Canterbury was played at Carisbrook in March, 1894, Otago winning by ten wickets. Otago scored 200 and 46 for no wickets, j. C. Lawton made 25 and 13, J. Baker 31, A. Clarke 26, F. Harper 41, J. Hope 20. and J. M‘Kenzie 34. Canterbury’s best bowler was Robertson (seven for 71). Canterbury scored 111 and 134, the chief contributors being H. C. Ridley 20 and 11, F. Wilding 26, R. B. Mathias 35 and 48, and T. H. North 27 and 10. Lawton (five for 32 and one for 15), Hope (two for 41 and two for 32), and Downes (two for 14 and six for 69) took - the wickets for Otago. Later the same month Otago met Hawke’s Bay at Carisbrook, and defeated the visitors by an innings and 112 runs. Otago scored 316, J. Baker 48, J. C. Lawton 82, A. E. Clarke 11. J. M‘Kenzie 74, A. H. Fisher 54, and A. Kinvig (who was making his first appearance for Otago) 23 not out were the principal run-getters. Gore (four for 90) and Lusk (three for 76) were Hawke’s Bay’s most successful bowlers. Hawke’s Bay were disposed of for 63 and 141, A. Downes taking seven for 32 and seven for 71. and A. H. Fisher three for 17 and one for 33. The nineteenth annua! meeting was held in Wain's Hotel on Saturday. September 29. 1894. Mr Janies Smith being elected president, while Messrs C. W. Rattray and A. M‘Don ald were the vice-presidents. Mr J. Smyth was elected secretary and treasurer. The committee consisted of Messrs F. D. Clayton, W. Elder, L. C. Gooch, W. Mac Lean, B, Ringer, and T. Ritchie. The Union S.g. Co. Cricket Club w.as affiliated as a junior club, and at this period the clubs affiliated to the association were : —Seniors : Albion, Carishrook, Dunedin, Grange, and Opoho. Juniors: Anderson’s Bay, High School, Oceana, Port Chalmers, Union S.S. Co. WELLINGTON'S FIRST VISIT. A Wellington team visited Dunedin, this being the first match played between the two provinces in liunedin. The match was played at Carisbrook on December 1, 1894, and though Otago only required 100 to win. In the second innings it was disposed of for 54 and Wellington thus won by 45 runs. Wellington scored 146 and 98, C. Cross compiling 30, A. Blacklock 10 and 45, A. R. Holdship 45, R. Blacklock 14, and C. Gore 14 and 10. A. Downes took four for 37 and seven for 31 and Fisher four for 38 and two for 21. Otago scored 145 and 54. Alex. Downes top-scored with 03, A. F.. Clarke made 32. Sprnggon 10, and Williams 18. Upbam secured three for 39 and five for 13, ami Ashbolt seven for 61 and five for 41 for Wellington. In February, 1895, a Fiji team met Otago at Carisbrook. Several of the Fijians played in bare feet. Otago scored 197 and 48 for six wickets (J, Baker 80, A. E. Clarke 16. C. W. Rattray 15, W. Parker 16 and 11 not out, Currie 42, and Spraggon 21). The New Zealand team played New South Wales at Lancaster Park on December 30, 31, 1895, and January 1, 1896, Otago being represented by A. G. Rains, who made 55 in the first innings; A. E. Clarke, 15 in the second innings; A. H. Fisher, 52 not out in the second innings; and A. Downes, 15 in the second innings. New Zealand won the match' by 142 rums, A. Downes securing four for 73 and one for 11, while Fisher secured two for 53 and five for 20. The annual match against Canterbury was played at Carisbrook on February _ 15 and following days, and resulted in a win for Otago by six wickets. Canterbury scored 145 and 114, R. D. Harman (24), H. Demaus (52). A. E. Ridley (32 and 19), and T. W. Reese (32) being the prineijial scorers. A. Downes secured four for 58 and four for 46, A, H. Fisher four for 49 and one for 21, and J. Baker two for 11. Otago scored 188 and 72 for four wickets (J. Baker 53 and 18, A. K. Cb’rke 43 and 24 not out). A. Downes (31). D. Rocrc (four for 29), C. R. Clark (three for 42), and T. Malone (three for 25) were the most successful Canterbury howlers. Mr James Wilson was elected president at the twenty-first annual meeting of the association, held in Wain’s Hotel on Monday, September 28, 1896, the vice-presidents being Messrs A. C. Hanlon and C.. W. Buttray, with Mr A. M'Donald as secretary and treasurer. The committee comprised Messrs W. H. Skitch, A. Restieaux. L. C. Gooch, B. Ringer, F. G. Brittain, T. Paterson, and R. C. Allmitt. Mr A. M'Donald resigned ns secretary during the year, and Mr W. M. MncLcan was appointed in his stead. INVITATION TO FISKER. In November, 1896, the Australian eleven visited New Zealand, and a match with an Otago eleven was played, the Australians winning a thrilling game by 17 runs. Australia scored 130 and 95 (Tredale 34, G. Giffen 13 and 22, Clem Hill 34 and 13, H. Trott 31, and H. Trumble 27 not out). A. H. Fisher (six for 39 and five for 39) bowled exas did A. Downes (three for 42 and four for 38). Fisher’s bowling so impressed the Australians that ho was invited to go to Australia for a try-out on the Australian wickets with a view to selection for Australia. Otago scored 144 and 64, R. Spraggen making 36, F. Liggins 25, A. Downes and F. D. Clayton 18 each. ■ G. Giffen obtained seven for 51, H. Trumble three for 29 and nine for 30, Jones two for 4 and two for 6. The annual match against Canterbury at Carisbrook in November, 1896, resulted in a win for Otago by nine wickets. The game was played on a soft wicket, and Canterbury were disposed of for 27 and 49. Downes securing seven for 12 and five for 28, and A. H. Fisher three for 14 and two for 17. Otago scored 50 ami one for 18. A. E. Clarke made 21. A. G. Rains 11, and F. C, Liggins 11 not out. North five for 13 and” Bates three for 18 bowled well for Canterbury. A Queensland team also paid a visit and met Otago at Carisbrook on January 15, 1897, Queensland .winning by

The thirty-seventh match between Otago and Canterbury was played at Lancaster Park. Canterbury winning by four wickets. Otago scored 74 and 183 A. Kinvig scored 55, A. E. Clarke 26 and 20, F. C. Liggins If), A. Downes 36, G. G. Austin 13 not out, W. AVcbb 18, and J. Hope 12. Wilding (four for 10 and three for 37), Pearce (four for 25 and two for 50) were Canterbury’s most successful bowlers. Canterbury made 103 and 158 for six wickets. A. Ridley compiled 76 not out. A. Downes (seven for 53) and J. Hope (three for 15 and three for 48) were Otago’s best bowlers. Mr A. C. Hanlon became president of the association at the twenty-third annual meeting on September 17. 1898, in AVain’s Hotel. Messrs C. W. Rattray _ and L. C. Gooch were the vicepresidents, and Mr W. M. MaeLtym secretary and treasurer. The committee was Messrs C. R. Smith, A. Mac Lean. T. Ritchie, F. H. Campbell, W. H. Skitch, A. Restieaux, and D. Smyth. UMPIRES’ ASSOCIATION FORMED. The secretary of the Dunedin Club wrote suggesting the formation of an Umpires’ Association, and promising support from his club. A meeting was called, and the Umpires’ Association was formed. _ The attention of the Umpires’ _ Association was drawn to the suspicious bowling of certain players, and it was asked to strictly enforce the, rule in regard to throwing. Two inquiries were held concerning players insulting umpires and questioning their decisions, and one pi aver was suspended for one month. AAL MacLean tendered his resignation ns secretary. and F. C. Liggins was appointed in his stead, Carisbrook A was the premier senior team, Dunedin No. 2 the iunior pre-. miers, and Dunedin the third grade premiers. A_ New Zealand team visited Australia this season, and J. Baker, A. Downes, and A. H. Fisher were selected from Otago. The match between Otago and Canterbury was played at Carisbrook in December._ 1898. Otago winning bv 261 runs, scoring i 237 and 227. J. Baker made 20 and 18. AA T . Johns+on 48. C. H. Reese_ two for 41 and three for 30, and Sims- four for 86. Canterbury scored 126 and 77, D. Reese 29 and 18, A. Sims 17 and 16, R. Barry 27. J. Phillips 27 and 12 being the chief contributors. Otago’s best bowlers were Fisher three for 32 and one for 21, G. G. Austin one for 54 and four for 13, J. Hope six for 34 and five for 40. OTAGO MEETS NEW ZEALAND TEAM. A match was played between an Otago thirteen and a New Zealand thirteen in January, 1899, at Carisbrook, before the departure of the New Zealand team. Otago scored 105 and' 37 (C. Broad 11, A. E. Geddes 30 and 11, G. G. Austin 18 and 13, AV. Butler 23 not out). D. Reese (two for 13 and nine for 14) bowled exceedingly well for New Zealand. New Zealand scored 111 and 33 for two (J. Raker 21, D. .Reese IS and 10. Cobcroft 15, I. Mills 30). In New Zealand’s first innings T. Downes secured 10 wickets for 20 runs. MATCHES WITH SOUTHLAND. A match was played with Southland at Invercargill on January 26, 1898, resulting in a win for Southland by two wickets. Otago scored 52 and 105 (Ludbrook 24, J. Maefarlane 16, AV. Hayden 25 not out). Robertson, (six for 22 and six for 50), Taylor (four for 13 and there for 32) bowled well for Southland. Southland scored 115 and 43 for eight (Kane 15, G. G. Burnes 31, J. Taylor 39 not out and 17 not out). Gunthorpe (four for 34 and six for 20) and Maefarlane (three for 22 ami two for 17) bowled well for Otago. A return match was played at Carisbrook on March 24, when Otago won by an innings and 71 runs. Otago scored 233 (C. H. Broad 84, F. C. Lig2ins 44 jiot out. J. Baker 14. and J. Hope 15). Robertson took four for 111 and Purdue three for 25. Southland put together scores of 127 and 35 (Kane 35, T. Kingsland 35 not out, G. Purdue 31). Fisher (four for 44 and three for 18), Austin (two for 28 and three for 8), AVebb (two for 14 and four for 6) howled best for Otago.

The twenty-fourth annual meeting was held in Wain’s Hotel on September 16, 1899, Mr A. C. Hanlon being elected president and Messrs 0. W. Rattray and L. C. Gooch vice-presidents. Mr G. R. Smith was elected secretary and treasurer, the committee comprising Messrs A. M'Lean, A. Restieaux. F. O. Liggins, G. W. C. Macdonald, W. Mac Lean, F. H. Campbell, and J. L. Jamieson. W. Mac Lean resigned from the committee during the season, and T. Ritchie was elected in his stead. A visit from the Melbourne Cricket Club was received this season. Carisbrook again won the senior competition, Opobo the junior, and Hendley the third grade. In the match against Wellington Otago suffered a big defeat by an innings and 256 runs. Wellington scored 464 (F. Midlane 149, C. Richardson 113, K. Tucker 74, A. 6. Williams 42). Otago were disposed of for 54 and 154 (J. Baker 64, Johnston 23, H. G. Siedeberg 15 not out and 23, R. Wilkie 11 and 19). Upham five for 27, Ashbolt four for 24, and Tucker six for 20 secured the wickets.

The Canterbury match was played at Lancaster Park on January 4, 1900, and resulted in a win for runs. Otago scored 127 and 152 (J. Baker 23 and 14, W. Johnston 18, G. G. Austin 18, A. E. Geddes 41 not out, and A. Downes 34). Frankish four for 26 and four for 50 and Malone one for 30 and four for 37 were Canterbury’s best bowlers. Canterbury scored 98 and 144 (D. Reese 17 and 26, A. Sims 31 and 13, A. Ridley 16 and 10, R. Barry 35, Frankish 16 not out, T. W. Reese 16). Eekhofi (six for 27) and Downes (three for 21 and seven for 43) were Otago’s most successful bowlers.

The match with the Melbourne Cricket Club team was played at Carisbrook on March 10, 1900, and following days. This provided an interesting game, Melbourne scoring 183 and six for 222 (declared). Jacobs made 47, M'llraith 29 and 64, Aitken 21 and 33, and H. Graham 42). Webb took four wickets for 44, Fisher three for 39 and two for 51, and T. Downes three for 51. Otago scored 100 and 208 for eight, G. G. Austin compiling 35 and 52, J. Baker 23 and 30, A. Geddes 40, A. Downes 39. Cave obtained four wickets for 32. H. Trumble four for 34 and four for 94 for the Melbourne C.C. The match against Southland at Dun r edin was won by Otago by an innings and 1 run, J. Baker making 48 and R. Wilkie 36 in Otago’s total of 163. Southland was disposed of for 89 and 73, the wickets being shared by Fisher (seven for 61) and Geddes (five for 27). The twenty-fifth annual meeting was held in Wain’s Hotel on Friday, September 14, 1900, Mr A. C. Hanlon being re-elected president, and Messrs C. W. Rattrav and L. C. Gooch vice-pre-sidents. Mr C. R. Smith was elected secretary and treasurer, the committee comprising Messrs A. M'Lean, T. Ritchie, A. Restieaux. W. H. Skitch, F. C. Liggins, F. H. Campbell, and J. L. Jamieson. The winners of the competition for the previous season were:—Seniors, Carisbrook; juniors, Carisbrook D; third grade, Central Methodists. Canterbury won the annual match bv 125 runs. scoring 199 and 96 (Sims 25 and 19, IVigley 41, Orchard 55. H. C. Ridley 24. C. Boxshall 12 and 25). A. Downes took seven for 79 and two for 37, and Fisher two for 37 and five for 30. Otago was dismissed for 97 and 73. J. Baker (25 and 32) being the chief scorer. Callaway (four for 41 and eight for 41) and Pearce (six for 37) bonded well for Canterbury. Otago met Auckland at Carisbrook on December 31. 1900. and won by an innings and 53 runs. Otago scored 224, J. Baker compiling 20. A. Geddes 28, G. G. Austin 50, G.'Mills 39, A. Downes 20, and F. Williams 21. Auckland were disposed of for 55 and 116 (I. Mills 13, W. Stemson 28, W. Mills 42 not oid.). Down p s (seven for 36 and five for 72) and Fisher (three for 18 and four for 37) bowled unchanged throughout the game. The twentv-sixth annual meeting was held in Wain’s Hotel on Saturday. September 21. 1901. Mr A. C. Hanlon being elected president and Messrs L. C. Gooch and C. W. Rattray vice-presi-dents. Mr D. H. Thomson was appointed secretary and treasurer, and the committee consisted of Messrs A. Restieaux, A. M'Lean. W. H. Skitch, C. R Smith. T. Ritchie. F. H. Campbell. and J. L. Jamieson.

LORD HAWKE’S TEAM. A match was played against LorJ Hawke’s team on February J 3, 1903,. at Carisbrook, and resulted in a win for the English team by an innings and 230 runs. Otago scored 124 and 119,. Siedeberg top scoring with 21 and 52, while Cummings made 21, Howden 19 and 35, Fisher 23. Burnup obtained five for 50 and two for 30, Thompson, three for 30 and five for 35, and Dowson three for 3. England scored-473 (Warner 211, Fane 85, Thompson 31, and Stanning 30 not out). Downes (five for 181) and Fisher (four for 126) bowled well, and had several chances dropped. A match was played a week later between the English team and the South Island, the South Island being defeated bv an innings and 130 runs. South Island scored 51 and 133, Howden making 37 and Boxshall 15 and 40. Hargreave took six for 12, Thompson four for 37, and Burnup six for 36 for England, who scored 314 (Taylor 105, Warner 37, Bosanquet 82, Burnup 29, and Johnston 21). Downes (four for 102) and Fisher (three for 53) were the most successful bowlers for the South Island. There was no change in the personnel of president, vice-presidents, and secretary and treasurer at the twentyeighth annual meeting held at Wain’s Hotel on Saturday, September 19, 1903. The committee elected was Messrs W« Mac Lean, A. Mac Lean, T. Ritchie, C, R. Smith, W. H. Skitch, F. H, Campbell, and J. H. Miller. F. Shacklock was engaged as coach’ this season, and H. Graham was engaged by the Carisbrook Cricket Club. The Otago-Canterbury match was played at Haglev Park in December, 1903, and Canterbury won by 169 runs. Canterbury scored 3i3 and 157 (Frankish 56, C. Garrard 30. A. Kinvig 38, S„ Orchard 83 and 50, Weston. 42 and 21,Otago’s - most successful bowlers were Shacklock (eight for 136 and four for 59) and Fisher (one for 77 and six for 47). Otago scored 150 and 151, J, Baker making 51 and 29, Austin 25, H. Graham 20, Howden 23, Shacklock 27, and Fisher 30 not out. Callaway took five for 53 and five for 56, Frankish four for 61 and two for 50, and Bennett three for 22. When_ Otago defeated Southland by seven wickets at Carisbrook on January, ary 1, 1904, it scored 316 and 148 for three wickets. G. G. Austin compiled the big total of 182 not out, J. Baker 15 and 28 not out, H. Graham 36 and 86, and Geddes 21. Southland’s best bowler was Keenan, who took five for 52. Southland, 196 and 196, C. G.Wilson making 11 and 117 not out, Twemlow 28 and 24, Burnes 62, and Poole 48 not out. . Graham took five for 48 and one for 38, Reardon one for 36 and five for 51, Austin two for 29 and two for 30.

The twenty-ninth annual meeting was held in Wain’s Hotel on September 24, 1904, and Mr A. C. Hanlon was re-elected president, Messrs C. W. Rattray and L. C. Gooch vice-presidents, and E. S. Wilson secretary and treasurer. The committee comprised Messrs C. R. Smith, W. H. Skitch, A. M‘ M‘Lean, J. J. Clark, W. Mac Lean, F. H. Campbell, and J. L. Jamieson. The winners of the various competitions for the previous season were: First grade, Carisbrook JB; second grade, Port Chalmers; third grade, Mornington; fourth grade, Star. Southland was defeated at Invercargill by eight wickets on December 26, Otago scoring 133 and 77 for two wickets. Baker made 33 and 18, Siedeberg 12 and 34 not out, Howden 22, Fisher 27. Crockett (five for 25) bowled well for Southland. Southland scored 56 and 153 (Wilson 43. Huntley 38 not out). Fisher was in great form with the .ball and took six for; 25 and four for '52, while Chadwick took two for 6 apd five for 54. On December 29 .Otago met Wellington at the Caledonian Ground and won by an innings and 75 runs, scoring 297, runs (Siedeberg 88, Baker 49, Austin 24, Graham 34, Fisher 31, ShacMock 31). Upham bowled very well and took seven for 31. Wellington scored 98 and 124 (J. B. Blacklock 60, Hickson 25 and 31, Mahoney 21). Downes again had fine figures—six for 52 and four for 41, Fisher securing two for 27 and two for 29.

Carisbrook were the premiers for the previous season. Dunedin No. 1 junior premiers, and Albion the third grade. The Otago-Canterbury match was plaved at Hngley Park on December 26/ 1901. and resulted in a win for Otago by 122 runs. Otago scored 127 and 248. Geddes making 26, Fisher 39, Burt 27 and 22, R. Wilkie 73, A. Downes 35. F. Williams 39. Callaway (three for 34 and two for 68). Frankish (four for 40 and six for 76) bowled well.

' The match against Canterbury was played at Carisbrook on January 2t--1905, Canterbury winning by 66 runs. Canterbury scored 148 and 180, A. Sims making 47 not out, Lawrence 17 and 27, Barry 16 and 19. Downes (five for 66), Austin (four for 35 and three for 22), and Fisher (five for 39) shared the bowling honours. _ Otago scored 168 and 44, Austin contributing 28, Siedeberg 40, Graham 17, (Baker 23, and Howden 27. Callaway secured five for 59 and five for 22, and Bennett also bowled exceedingly well to capture four for 58 and five for 10.

Canterbury was disposed of for 6/ and 186. the principal scorers being A.‘ Sims 20. S. Callaway 10 and 46, A. Ridley 39, Frankish 29, and Lawrence 36. The wickets were secured by Downes (seven for 32 and three for 78), Fisher (none for 8 and five for 67), and Monk two for 21 and two for 25).

Australia defeated Otago at Carisbrook. on March 3, 1905, by an innings and 172 runs, scoring 304 (Trumper 87, Duff 74, Gehrs 46. Kelly 28, and Cotter 28). Fisher took three for 94 and Shacklock five for 124. Otago failed badly with the bat, being disposed of for 55 and 76, Austin (14)' and Graham (28) being the only double-figure scorers. Noble (five for 30), Cotter (five for 20 and three for 16), Hopkins (four for 19), and Armstrong (three for 11) brought about the downfall of Otago. The only change in the executive officers at the thirtieth annual meeting of the association in E. S. Wilson’s board room on September 22, 1905, was that Mr W. H. Skitch came on- as a vicepresident in the stead of Mr L. C. Gooch. The committee consisted of Messrs A. M'Lean. A. Restieaux, J. J. Clark, J. Melville, C. R. Smith, F.. Kemplin, H. Campbell, and J. L, Jamieson.

A Hawke’s Bay team visited Dunedin and played Otago at -Carisbrook on December 31, 1901. the match resulting in a win for Otago by an innings and 117 runs. Albert Trott, the famous Australian player, was a member of the Hawke's Bay team. Otago scored 346. .1. Baker compiling 103, A. E. Geddes 77, B. Wilkie 49, A. Downes 30, and J. Burt 21. Trott took seven wickets for 136, and in Hawke's Bay’s scores of 113 and 116 was top scorer each time with 39 and 30_ nob out. Downes (seven for 51 and six for 60) bowled well for Otago.

Otago defeated Southland at Carisbrook in February, 1902, bv an innings and 65 runs, this match being a benefit match for O. Frith. Otago scored 247, A. Downes top scoring with 70. A. E. Geddes making 55, and G. Mills 43. Southland scored 32 and 140, 0. G. Wilson top scoring with 48. Gunthorpe took six for 21 and six for 60, Wilkie four for 6 and none for 33, and Downes none for 12 and four for 24. At the twenty-seventh annual meeting of the association in Wain’s Hotel on" Friday, September 19. 1902, Mr A. C. Hanlon was returned as president for another term, Messrs C. W. Rattray and L. C. Gooch were appointed vicepresidents, and Mr D. H. Thomson secretary and treasurer. The committee consisted of Messrs C. R. Smith, WH. Skitch, A. M. M'Lean, T. Ritchie, A. Restieaux, G. Macdonald, and F. H. Campbell. Mr D. H. Thomson resigned as secretary, and Mr E. S. Wilson was elected to the position, which he has filled continuouslv to the present day, a record of service that is unique in the game in New Zealand.

A suggestion was made of the amalgamation of Grange and Albion, but after some discussion the proposal waa' rejected. The winners of the competitions for the previous season were: First grades Carisbrook B; second grade, Grange third grade, Albion and St. Martin’s, equal; fourth grade, Roslyri; Wednesdav competition, Dunedin. The Southland match on February 27, was won by Otago by seven wickets, Otago scoring 154 and 77 for three, C. G. Wilson 63. H. Graham 68, and Howden 29. O’Halloran (five for 101); and Doig (six for 68) secured the wickets. Southland scored 69 and 169 (Kane 54 and Hamilton 30). • R. C. Torrance took seven for 21 and four for 56, H. Graham three for 31, and Reardon three for 23. Otago met Canterbury at Lancaster Park at Christmas, 1905, and won by 82 runs, scoring 156 and 208, Siedeberg 28 and 90, Graham 60 and 47, Austin 28 and 10, and Baker 25 being the highest scorers. The Canterbury wicket-takers were Callaway (four for 71 and five for 78), Bennett (five for 34), Olliver (four for 41). Canterbury, scored 122 and 159, Olliver making 20 and 27, Lawrence 10 and 26, Callaway 31, Orchard 33, Bennett 29 and 28. Downes bowled exceedingly well and took seven for 57 and five for 58.At New Year, 1906, Otago beat Auckland at Carisbrook by 139 runs, Otago scoring 279 and 228 (C. C. Wilson 137 and 58, G. G. Austin 26 and 29, H. Graham 44 and 24, C. E. Howden 39, H. G. Siedeberg 46, J. Baker_3B). Auckland scored 215 and 153, H. B. Lusk H and 13, L. G. Hemus 64 and 43, and A. Raddon 60 and 40 being the only batsmen to offer much opposition to the bowling of Downes (four

Hendley won the second grade and Albion the third grade. Canterbury beat Otago by seven wickets in the match at Carisbrook, Otao-o scoring only 89 and 98, the highest scorers being C. E. Howden 16 and G Cummings 14 and 26 not out. Frankish (three for 30 and four for 311 Sims (five for 35 and one for 27), Howell (two for 15 and three for 281 secured the wickets. Canterbury compiled 133 and 55 for three wickets, Orchard making 32, Garrard 29, Strange 42 and 27. Fisher took five for 33 and three for 21 and Austin two for 7.

A visit was received from a Melbourne County Cricket team in March, 1906, and this proved an exciting match, the Melbourne team being saved from defeat only by an arrangement made by Warwick Armstrong ■with C. G. Wilson that stumps should be drawn for the day if a wicket fell five minutes to time, and as it turned out Melbourne had two wickets to fall at live to six. As Aitken was away and Irwin had received an injury to his leg it is very doubtful if they could have lasted the five minutes left to play. Otago scored 130 and 253, Siedeberg making 102, Baker 65, Austin 16 and 28, Graham 16 and 15, Fisher 31, Downes 18 and 19 not out. Armstrong claimed five for 75 and five for 66, while M’Leod got four for 51 and one for 65.
