DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

Cup Won by Wild Chase Champagne Stakes to Haughty Winner Sir Charles Clifford’s “Hat Trick”

'After a spell of good weather it was unfortunate that it should have broken so badly on the eve of the Dunedin Cup Meeting, the most important fixture held each season by the Dunedin Jockey Club, and necessitated the postponement of the first day’s racing on Thursday until yesterday. About an hour and a-half prior to the commencement of the programme a very heavy shower fell in the city, which no ‘ doubt prevented a large number from attending the fixture. The weather at Wingatui, as is often the case, was not so bad, and the afternoon’s racing was held in sunshine, and before the cup was run there was quite a good attendance considering there was not the usual halfholiday. Visitors from north and south and the country were strongly in evidence, and they were treated to an excellent afternoon’s sport. The course was in much better condition than anticipated. It showed how effective the new drainage scheme had proved, and provided good hut slow going, and under the sunshine and wind improved as the afternoon progressed. The race for the time-honoured Dunedin Cup was a good one, and the victory of Sir Chas. Clifford’s three-year-old, Wild Chase, was a popular one, and marked this owner’s first success in the race. Unfortunately he was not able to be present, and his trainer received the handsome trophy attached to the stake on his behalf. His colours were also carried to victory in the Publicans’ Handicap and Champagne Stakes, thus performing the “ hat trick,” a feat also shared by his trainers and Jockey. With the exception of the winners of the first two races on the card, Hoyal Saxon and Robant. the other six were well supported. _ This no doubt kept the money in circulation and at the close of the day the investments totalled £16,791 (win £7,016 10s, place £9,774 10s) as compared with £17,260 10s last year, £16,757 10s in 1935, and £13,412 in 1934. Mr Gieseler’s starting left _ a _ good deal to be desired as in the majority of cases the dispatches were either moving in or snap ones. The result was that too many of the riders were looking toi-secure undue advantages in the jump out. The meeting was managed and the racing, in addition to being interesting with good finishes, was also clean and no inquiries were necessary during the afternoon. Concluding results:—■ PUBLICANS’ HANDICAP, £300; second 45, third 15. 1-I—PAPER SLIPPER, Sir Charles Clifford’s br c, by Paper Money—Shuffle, Syrs, 9.3 (G. Humphries) 1 7-7—Silk Paper, Mr M. J. Gold Boa was withdrawn, and Paper Slipper (832-609) monopolised the wagering, with Half Note (220-351), Knockfin (189-341), and Lochlaggan (151-275) were the best backed of the others. The start was no.t a good one as the field was moving in when the harrier was released, and Silk Paper got the best of it. She was followed out by Viking and Paper Slipper. At the end of a furlong Lochlaggan and Viking Joined Silk Paper, this trio leading Paper Slipper and Half Note. Rounding the far turn Silk Paper was half a length in front of Viking, with Lochlaggan a similar distance away third l . Paper Slipper, Half Note, and Rebel Chief next, and Knockfin at the tail of the field. Viking retired' at the end of three furlongs, and Rebel Chief moved up as the field raced up the rise. Silk Paper was first into the straight from Lochlaggan and Rebel Chief, with the favourite, still on the rails, next. At the distance Paper Slipper was pulled out, and, catching Silk Paper and Lochlaggan opposite the top stand, won easily by a length and a-half from Silk Paper, and Knockfin finished very fast into third place. Half Note was a length and a-half away fourth, with Lochlaggan, and Invoice next. Time, Imin 16 2-ssec. DUNEDIN CUP HANDICAP. £750, including Gold Cup valued £100; second 120, third 40. When the barrier rose Tunneller cannoned into Queen of Song, and Rebel Lad was a little slow to begin. Amy Johnson, who started from the extreme outside, had taken charge before reaching the stand the first time, and showed the way out of the straight to Ashaway, Gay Circle, Toreador, Wild

Chase, and M‘Heath Passing the mile post Amy Johnson was racing two lengths clear of Ashaway and Gay Circle, the favourite, on the rails, next. As the field raced along the back Amy Johnson was a length and a-half clear, with Ashaway, Gay Circle, and Wild Chase, and Argentic last. Passing the five-furlong post Ashaway and Gay Circle ran up and joined Amy Johnson, and behind these three were Wild Chase, Cerne Abbas, Queen of Song, and Tunneller. Before reaching the three-furlong post both Ashaway and Gay Circle dropped out, and Tunneller moved up fast. Amy Johnson maintained her lead to the straight entrance, then retired in favour of Tunneller, who was left in charge two loirtghs in front of Wild Chase, and then •,followed Queen of Song, Cerne Abbas, and Rebel Lad. At the distance Wild Chase challenged Tunneller, and, catching him at the outside stand, won by a length and a-quarter. Queen of Song was only a head away third, a neck in front of Davolo.. Then there was a gap to Rebel Lad, Cerne Abbas, Argentic, M‘Heath, Toreador, Ashaway, Amy Johnson, and Gay Circle last. Time, 2min 32 3-ssec.
