UNEMPLOYMENT
NATIONAL WORKERS’ MOVEMENT The quarterly meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement was held in the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening before a good attendance of members and their wives. Mr E. Waterson (vice-president) presided. Correspondence was read and received from Mr P. Neil son, M.P.i Hon. R. Semple (Minister of Public Works), Mr F. Burgess (Gore), and various _ other local organisations. The organising report showed that four members had joined since last meeting, one had died, and 13 had been granted clearances on securing full-time work, the membership now standing at 856. The secretary read the quarterly balance sheet, ending January ■which showed the branch to be in a very satisfactory position, both in regard to membership and finance, and, _ after the auditors’ report was heard, it was adopted unanimously. Complaints were heard regarding inspectors from the Labour Bureau still going round the houses of relief workers seeking information from their wives, and also in regard to inquiries being made from employers into the earnings of a relief worker’s family. It was left in the secretary’s hands to brine the whole matter before the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour. An important notice of motion was tabled to be discussed at the next meeting in regard to the money sent to the national executive every month. Mr H. Silverstone delivered a short address on the Russian trial and the sentences imposed, and on the call of the chairman was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The members were then entertained at a social evening, free supper being provided. The following provided the concert programme—Mr H. Silverstone (piano solo), Mrs Hastie (songs), Mr J. Anderson (recitation), Mrs"ddagen (songs), Mr E. Harrison (songs'), Mr Williams (month organ solo). Mrs Webster (songs), and Mr C. Abbott (comedian). A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the performers.
