SHAKESPEARE'S DESCENDANTS
A William Shakespeare was said to be present at the “English Classic Luncheon” on Wednesday, .but it. seems that “ he does not claim .to be a, relation.” The only descendants of the true line derive from the poet’s younger sister Joan, who married William Hart, a hatter of Stratford. The Harts fell upon evil times; and a representative of the ‘ Observer,’ who in 1817 called upon the then head of the family, Mr William Hart, at Tewkesbury, and presented him with a guinea, was told.that “ it was the first benefit he had ever had from being a Shakespeare.” The family later migrated- to ' High Wycombe, and it was Mr Williaii Hart, from that town, who represented the Shakespeares at a Poets’ Dinner in the early century.—‘Observer.’
