A .young man, whose name was suppressed, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted suicide. Senior-sergeant Packer said that in the early hours of New Year’s morning some “first-footers” had gone to the defendant’s home. He and his wife had got out of bed and joined the party, which visited other places. A quarrel later arose between the defendant and his wife regarding another member of the party, and the wife had left home the next morning, saying she was going to speak to the person in question. The defendant was apparently brooding over the position, and some timp afterward his daughter told the neighbours that her father was lying on the floor and the gas was escaping. It was found that a rubber tube had been attached 'to the gas connection. The defendant was sent to the Hospital, where he quickly recovered. There was nothing against the young man, and he was of sober habits.—He was convicted and placed on probation for 'six months.
