TENNIS TITLES

COOKE WINS MEN'S SINGLES MISS NIGHOLLS AGAIN CHAMPION [Per United Press Association.] TIMA.RU, January 6. The New Zealand lawn tenuis tournament was concluded to-day, when all the finals were decided. There was no play till 12.30 owing to the state of the courts, but they dried out wonderfully well, and, though somewhat dead, improved as the afternoon wore on. The new title-holders are as follow: Men’s Singles.—D. C. Coombe (Wellington). ... _ , „ Women’s iss D. Nicholls (Wellington). . Men’s Doubles.—E. A, Roussell and R. M‘L. Ferkins (Wellington). Women’s Doubles.—Misses I. and T. Poole (Canterbury). . Mixed Doubles.—D. C. Coombe and Miss Nicholls (Wellington). Men’s Plate.—N. Edwards (WellmgPlate.—Miss I. Poole (Canterbury) . The Wilding Memorial Shield for the association gaining most wins was won by Wellington. Apart from the women’s douoles and the women’s plate, Wellington “scooped the pool,” and on the form revealed their representatives fully deserved their success. Coombe had a meritorious win over Bedford, who has several times previously beaten the new singles champion. The most brilliant lawn tennis of the tournament was the final of the men’s doubles, in which Roussell and Ferkins. rose to great heights, the last-named giving a really brilliant exhibition. . His covering up was faultless, while at times when he advanced to the net ne held the fort alone. In view of their previous matches, Mn which Bedford has several times beaten Coombe, the former was expected to win the title, but Coombe was rifbt on his game, and took his first title. There was little of interest in the first set, in which neither gave of his best, but both improved in toe second set. Coombe was driving solidly down both flanks, but Bedford was unperturbed, and fought back in great style to secure winners with fine placements. He won two games to love off his opponent’s service, and evened the score after being down, 5-2. Winning th° next two games, he took the set at 7-5. Coombe again assumed the upper hand in the third set, keeping Bedford on the base line,' and then advancing to the net to score winners with drop shots. He took the set, 6-4. In the fourth set Coombe, made far. too many errors, giving. Bedford the chances be was looking for, and he made the most of them. Coombe won only two games in this set. The final set. was disappointing, as it was expected that there would be a great fight. Coombe quickly forged ahead and took all the games except one. The women’s singles final produced very ordinary tennis, and at no stage did Miss Nicholls look like being beaten. She dropped three games in the first set and met slightly stitfer opposition in the next, in which Miss Beverley led 4-2. Miss Nicholls pulled up quickly from this point and won four games on end to take the set and the match. It w as her fifth New Zealand title and her third successive victory. After dropping the first set Misses I. and T. Poole won the women’s doubles title from Misses Wake and Bishop. Play at the start was verv even, but Misses Bishop and Wake were combining to better advantage. The Poole sisters put more life into their play in the second set, which they took after a hard fight. Misses Bishop and Wake fell right away in the final set, winning one game only. In the mixed doubles the two New Zealand singles champions, D. .C. Coombe and Miss Nicholls, were paired against E. A. Roussell (Wellington) and Miss I. Poole.- The latter pair were right off their game. They seemed unable to do anything right, and were well beaten from the start. By taking this match Coombe -and Miss Nicholls each won two titles. The final of the men’s doubles made up for the mediocre form of most other finals, and was a fitting finale to the tournament. The net exchanges had the crowd on its toes, and both pairs effected great recoveries. Seay was not up to his best form, and Angas lias played better, but nothing should be allowed to detract from the merit of the win of the Wellington pair. They fought for every point, and, though down 1-3 in the final set, revealed remarkable courage and tenacity to even "the score at 3—all, and then take the lead. While Roussell was severe overhead, the win of the Wellington pair was largely due to the brilliant net work of Ferkins, who proved himself the best doubles player seen at the tournament.
