DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

Summer Meeting Successfully Opened Tunneller Wins Otago Handicap M'Heath Returns Big Dividend The crowd at Wingatul on Saturday afternoon was treated to one of the best day’s racing seen on this course for some years, and it. : was made all the more pleasant by the bright sunshine. The attendance was good, and included a big percentage of visitors from Gentral Otago and Southland.

' The course provided good, but; dead, going, and improved as the' afternoon advanced. ‘ The good sward of grafts prevented it cutting up, and the only fault that could be found was that the times were slower than usual. . The racing was interesting throughout the afternoon, and though only one first favourite was returned a winner five of them paid dividends, and all but one winner, M‘Heath, were well backed. The exception, recently purchased by Mr Alex. Ferguson, a Well-known local Sportsman, returned a large win dividend, having only £2l 10s invested on his winning chance. The committee was well rewarded ■ tor increasing the stake for the principal race, the Otago Handicap, to £SOO, for not only did it attract one of the best fields seen at Wingatui for some years, but also produced a most interesting race. At the top of the straight half a dozen horses appeared to have winning chances, and the result, mutt have been satisfactory to the majority of the punters, _as three 61 the four best backed filled the .. • places.

Cooper), 10-10 Great Star 8.0 (W. H. Jones), 11-11 Grand :Finale 7.9 car. 7.10) (A. G. Parsons). 9-9 Amy Johnson 7.7 (H. Phillips),. . ... Silver Streak, Tauramai, and Daring Deed were withdrawn, and Queen of Song (794-690), Tunneller (247-468), Travenna (247-463), Davolo (206-429), and Guarantee (182-340) were the best backed. From a moving-in start Great" Star led Tunneller and the favourite round the turn out of the straight. At the mile post Great Star was over two lengths clear of Tunneller. with a gap of a length and a-half to Queen of who was followed by Gay Circle, Davolo, and Amy Johnson. Racing along the back Great Star had drawn out three lengths clear fromTunneller who wag followed by Gay, Circle aid the favourite. Going to the far turn Gay Circle and. Tunneller had reduced Great Stains lead to a length and a-half. Racing up the rise Great Star led Tunneller, Gay Circle, and Sieen of Song, and they turned into e straight in that order. Once in the straight Tunneller headed off Great Star, and they were followed by Gay Circle, Queen of Song, and Davolo. At the distance Tunneller was well clear, and as Great Star dropped back he appeared to interfere with the run the mvourite was making, and she had, to be pulled to the outside. Tunneller held his advantage to win by threequarters of a length from Queen of Song, with Davolo finishing fast only half a length off third. Gay Circle, Great Star, Amy Johnson, and Poly-, dora were next, then Guarantee and The Surgeon. Time, 2min 16 2-ssec.

Mr Gieseler’s starting was quite satisfactory until he sent two of the fields away from “ snap ” starts. After that the riders appeared to lack confidence, and the dispatch for the Burnside Handicap was very straggly. V After the Milburn Handicap J. O’Connor,' rider of Stolen March, was severely reprimanded by the Judicial Committee for crossing over to the rails too quickly shortly after the start. Stolen March started from the extreme outside of the field. Considering that in three of the races the fields' were : 6nly big enough to pay out two place dividends the wagering must.be considered satisfactory. The win machine , handled, £8,069 10s, and place £11,369 10s, making a total of £19,439, as compared with £17,721 on the corresponding day last year, £14,655 in 1934, £13,932 in 1933, and £24,826 10 years ago. The good management .of the day s racing reflected credit on all the officials, stipendiary and honorary, and punctuality. was fairly well observed, the last race being started not quite 20 minutes after the scheduled time. Concluding results:—

Bennie, suffered severe concussion and a lacerated scalp. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital, and an X-ray examination was made. His condition was regarded l as serious when he was admitted, and it was unchanged to-day. Another jockey, R. W. M'Tavish, had one of his knees wrenched in the Railway Handicap when his mount Tonovre, came into contact with the .course rail early in the race. After dismounting from Tonerre at the finish of the race he had to lie carried into the jockeys’ room, where it was found time his knee was injured. MEETING LYNCH LAW'S THIRD VICTORY Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, December 27. The Australian Jockey Club’s Summer Meeting was continued in heavy rain, and the track was holding. Jamieson’s Limond colt Lynch Law further stressed his claims to be recognised as the best colt of the year by comfortably winning the December Stakes, his third victory in three starts. He quickly ran to the front, and the issue was never in doubt. Lynch Law has now demonstrated his ability to handle any ground in any circumstances. Jamieson’s other Limond colt, Birthday Boy, was second in the Summer Nursery Handicap. On Parade, relishing the heavy going, convincingly won the A.J.C. Handicap. A protest entered by K. Hewitt, the trainer of El Senorita, against Sir Ross being declared the winner of the Cup was on the ground that Knox, when using the whip approaching the winning post, struck Heather, causing the latter to lose his whip. Hewitt was fined £5 for lodging a frivolous objection. The results included:— DECEMBER STAKES, l,soosovs. sf.
