REMARKABLE TENNIS PLAYER

SIXTY AND STILL SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCES IN SYDNEY COMPETITION A remarkable tennis player is Mrs Arens, of the Sunnysidc Club, in the Western Suburbs Hardcourt Association, At CO years of age she not only was in the winning team in the A grade women’s ' raid-week_ competition, but had some outstanding successes (says the Sydney ‘Sun’). Tennis calls for quick movements and great strain in the muscles, but that does not bother Mrs Arens, For years now she has been playing the game, and judging by her present skill, seems like, playing for some time yet. The calibre of her opponents never worries her, for the more difficult they are the more she concentrates, and the better strokes she reveals. During the last Western Suburbs mid-week scries, Mrs Arcus played with Mrs Travers, who was a member of the interdistrict team which won the second division of the Angus and Coote Cup. As a pair they bad some particularly fine wins, especially in the matches against the formidable Folkestone team. In the Folkestone four were Mrs Merabrey and Mrs Noah, the latter also a member of the successful Angus and Coote Cup team. Mrs Arens and Mrs Travers accounted for that pair, 6-3, 6-1. 1 Airs Noah was astonished by the accuracy of Airs Arens, and yesterday paid a high tribute to her rival. “ She is wonderful.” she said. “ For a woman of her age I believe there is no equal in Sydney, or oven New South ‘Wales.” Airs Arens’s best shot is the volley. Whether it is close to the ground or almost chin-high, Airs Arens gets the racket square on the ball, and rarely fails to skim the net. Frequently she has left her rivals gasping at the manner in which she reaches the ball, on the volley, to send it across for an outright win. She does not rush round the court when near the baseline, chiefly because her anticipation has her in the right spot. Her drives are not noted for their speed, but she does place the ball deep to the corners for many outright point-winners. Now that Sunnysidc has won the competition, Airs Arens is taking a

well-earned rest, but she has announced that when the next women’s mid-week scries comes along she will be among those present again. Her two daughters, Thelma and .Myrtle, arc members of A reserve grade team in the same district.
