LAST YEAR’S PREMIERS
FEW CHANGES 111 ALBION TEAM SOLID SIDE ANTICIPATED [By H.P.S.] Albion, winners of the senior competition last season, expect to field a strong side again this season, and with one exception all of last year’s regular players will again be available. The exception, however, is a notable one, that great stalwart, Jim Barron, who represented Otago in the past, having decided to give the game best in favour of bowls. He has joined the Opoho Bowling Club, and his fellowcncketers will wish him as much success in this pastime as he enjoyed at cricket. For very many years he was one of Albion’s best all-rounders, and always a fine club man. Albion’s greatest acquisition should be'-Olaf Everson, who formerly played for Y.M.C.A. in Auckland and played one game with Albion at the end of last season, impressing the critics by his wicketkeeping ability. He is very keen to don the pads. Jim Shepherd is still a very useful cricketer, particularly in bowling, and his long experience and knowledge of the game is an asset to any side. S. Duncan (who led Albion last season) will be out again, and big things are expected of Langford Smith, one of the most promising of Otago’s younger representative players. Jack Allen, one of the mainstays of the attack last season, is again available, and much attention this season __ will centre on Ron Silver, whose fine bowling in the match with Canterbury at the end of last season attracted the attention of northern critics, some of whom have already spoken of him as a possibility as New Zealan d’s fast bowler for the Eng- ■ lish tour, O. Dalziel, a solid batsman who played some good innings last season, will again assist the side, and it is pleasing to learn that Herb. Martin has so far recovered from the broken leg suffered during the football season as to be able to take part in the summer sport. If he attended practice more regularly, Martin would, go further in the game for he is a punishing batsman and an excellent fi Id. Bill Brookes and Bill Ditchfield, both good club men, will take the field again, Ditchfield p r oved his worth for Otago a couple of seasons ago, but struck a lean patch last season. In form, he is one of Otago’s most reliable rungetters. In the two years that the intermediate competition has been in vogue, Albion has carried off the honours, so that there is no lack of talent to fill whatever vacancies may occur in the senior team during the season. E. Barron is a promising batsman who was called on by tlm seniors occasionally last season, and Bob Green is a fast bowler of real promise. C. J. S. Archer is a very solid batsman, and captain of the intermediates and also club captain of the Albion Club is Alex. Sinclair 'who is a good all-round cricketer and a fine club man. President of the club is Mr L. Joel, a former member of the Otago Cricket Association and a great supporter of the game for man years. Mr H. J. Greenfield has been re-elected secretary, a position he has filled with conspicuous ability for some jears past. He is a
real enthusiast for the game, and that the Albion Club is in so good a position to-day may be partly attr.outed to his efforts.
