NOTES AN& COMMENTS The association’s A grade men’s competition has now concluded, with Y.M.C.A. the winner and. Y.M.I). run-ner-up. The final positions of the teams are as follow:—Y.M.CiA. 13 points, Y.M.D. 12, Mayfair 9, Pioneer 7, Grange 6, United 4, Railway and St. Clair 2. Each team is to be congratulated on the enthusiasm displayed during the season. In the deciding game for the A grade shield Y.M.C-A. defeated Y.M.D. 20-12. On the night’s play the better team undoubtedly won, showing all-round superiority. Perhaps a mistake was made by Y.M.D, in opening with Hall against Miller. _ In taking the second game off Miller 21-19 Hall took too much out of himself, and for the balance of the match gave his poorest display of the season, me of the best local players, his lapses from form are unaccountable. For Y.M.C.A. Pollock won seven games, losing one to Harrop: Miller and Dunbar six games, and Allen one. Allen, though a brilliant driver, fails badly in consistency. One of the Y.M.D. players, Harrop, won six games, losing to Miller and Pollock.' Although Allen defaulted for Y.M.C.A. in two games, the success of the other Y.M.D. players was disappointing. The consistent and at times brilliant play of Pollock, Miller, and Dunbar would have taken a great deal of beating. ' It is interesting to note the_ performances of Miller (Otago champion and Harrop (runner-up) during the competition, the former losing nine ,games in 112 played, and the latter 14. Grange won by default from Pioneer. Mayfair narrowly defeated Railway 17-15—a very close match all round. G. Claridge for Mayfair played _ exceptionally well, winning his eight games. Strachau, for Railway, won six games. United easily disposed of St. Clair to the tune of 23-9, Laidlaw winning all his games and Patchett losing one. The ladies’ competition has also ncrw concluded, with Red Triangle the winner and D.S.A. I. runners-up. The final positions of the teams are as follow:—Red Triangle 14 points, D.S.A. 1. 11, Pioneer 10, St. Patrick’s I. 8, Geisha 6, Brown Ewing’s 3, St. Patrick’s 11. 2, D.S.A. 11. 1. St. Patrick’s I. has yet to play D.S.A. 11. It is very pleasing to note the great amount of interest that has been displayed by these teams during the season, and it is hoped that the number of entrants next year will be increased. The Y.M.C.A. and Red Triangle trains are to bo congratulated on winning the respective competitions. The first interprovincial match between Otago and Southland took place on the night of the Ranfurly Shield game, when Southland suffered defeat. The match, which was played 1 1 the Y.M.C.A., was won by Otago 48-C. The Otago players were Don Miller, Harrop, Pollock, Hall, G. Claridge. and Dunbar; and for Southland Robson, M'Bride, Lauden, Walsh, Walker, and Brown. Southland had some good players, who showed much promise, but need big match competition to bring them out The best player was M'Bride, an ex-Y.M.G.A. player, who took a game from each of the local players except Miller. Robson, the present Southland champion, also played well. The years of competitive play of the local players stood them in good stead. Mr Miller, the Otago Association’s president, in welcoming the visiting players, expressed pleasure at this match being the first interprovincial fixture. Mr Robson, Southland president, in replying, invited the team to Invercargill for the return match, to be played on August 22. The following team will play Southland at Invercargill on August 22; Miller, Dunbar. G. Claridge, Patchett, Strachau, and Dawson,
