DAVIDSON’S SHOOTING

GIVES MOSGIEL GOOD WIN Ragged Soccer was seen at Logan Park, where Mosgiel defeated Maori Hill by 5 goals to 1. The difference between the teams was by no means as great as the goal margin would indicate. By his steady positional play Davidson scored four excellent goals. The teams were:— Maori Hill. —Holden, Taylor, Bayne, Culbert, Sutherland. Haldane, Gilchrist, Little, Mills, Dalziel, Balk. Mosgiel.—Hall, Kitto, R. Steven, Stenhonse, Skinner, Williamson, Nicholson, Rogers, Davidson, I* arnan, N. Steven.

Maori Hill settled down quickly and opened the scoring. Sutherland sent out to Balk, who returned to goal. Gilchrist secured and beat Hall. .Maori Hill 1, Mosgiel 0. Play was still dominated by Hill, Sutherland being very effective in starting movements. Hall saved strongly off Balk, and from a Ion" clearance Mosgiel attacked. Sutherland dropped back and saved a certain goal. The clearance went to Rogers, who cleverly back-heeled to Davidson, a heavy drive by the centre beating Holden. Maori Hill 1, Mosgiel 1. There was little cohesion between Mosgiel’s forwards and halves, but the Reds slowly worked to Hill’s end. from corner kick Sutherland headed out. Rogers secured and slipped a pass to Davidson, who scored a fine goal. Mosgiel 2, Maori Hill 1. The game was of a poor standard. The Hifi defence was good against the wild kicking of Mosgiel, but the forwards’ combination was indifferent. Miles, at centre, was by no means successful. Sutherland and Balk were playing best for Hill, and Farnan was the outstanding player for Mosgiel, who were on attack when the spell ended: Mosgiel 2, Maori Hill 1. There were a number of willing but unscientific rallies after the resumption. Taylor continued to be the mainstay of Hill’s defence, while Hall saved long shot from Mills. Wild kicking spoilt an almost certain goal for Mosgiel. Nicholson banged across the goal, and Haldane mis-kickcd and gave away a corner, from wliich Hill leared. Balk made a good run, and sent in a dangerous cross to Mills. The centre forward wag in an awkward position, but his shot missed only by a foot. Hill continued to press, and luck rather than solidity in defence kept Mosgiel’s goal intact. Little was handy when he shot ,the ball going over the bar. From the goal kick Mosgiel attacked, and a corner placement from Nicholson was headed across the goal by Davidson. Farnan failed to anticipate, and a good opportunity was lost. A minute later, however, Davidson received from the left, and beat two backs to reach the area. His shot from close quarters beat Holden all the way. Mosgiel 3, Maori Hill 11 A dangerous shot from Nicholson brought Holden to his knees, and although Rogers charged him he threw clear. Mosgiel _ maintained the pressure, and Davidson shot high. A penalty was awarded against Mosgiel just inside halfway. Cuthbert made a perfect placement, which Hall fielded, and Dalziel’s return shot went over the bar. From Hill’s right the ball came across to Balk, who trapped cleverly d shot directly. Hall saved efficiently. Then Cuthbert placed another penalty kick inaccurately. Maori Hill were moving better in the dying stages of the game, but in a breakaway, in which Farnan and Steven combined well, Mosgiel put the issue beyond doubt. The ball was passed to Nicholson, who lifted high into the net. Mosgiel 4, Maori Hill 1. Hill forced a corner which was resultless. Mosgiel dashed away again, and, receiving from the right. Davidson etted easily right on time. Final score:— Mosgiel 5 Maori Hill 1 Mr W. P. Smith was the referee. BY ONE GOAL NORTHERN DEFEAT ROSLYN By one goal Northern defeated Ros-lyn-Wakari at Prospect Park in a dull game. The teams were evenly matched, and although patches of good play were witnessed in the first half, the second spell was uninteresting. The Roslyn team was unlucky in not holding Northern to a draw, the referee giving a questionable decision close on time. The teams were:— Northern. Collins, Anderson, R. Smith, Latimer, Gordon, Sutherland, L. Smith, M'Hugh, Peart, Reynolds, Buchanan. Roslyn-Wakari.—H. Agnew, Ramage, Ness, Chisholm, Welham, .M'Callion, Smyth. L. Agnew, Campbell, Munsie, Rutherford. From the kick-off by Northern Smyth secured the ball and carried play up the right wing, but Collins made a smart save. After stopping a northern rush Agnew took the ball and beat Collins with a fine ground drive. Roslyn-Wakari 1, Northern 0. A beautiful shot by Campbell gave the Northern goalie another opportunity to make a good save. From a scramble in front of the Northern posts the ball spun off the back of the goalie’s hand into the net. Northern 1, Roslyn-Wakari 1. A cross by Buchanan was turned ti. account by Peart, who headed the hall into th'> net. Northern 2. RoslynWakari 1.

Following a goal kick by Collins, WelJiam received and headed to Rutherford, the latter scoring with a beautiful centre. Half-time;—Northern 2,' Roslyn-Wakari 2. Securing the ball a few minutes after the resumption of play, Peart beat Agnew to give Northern the lead. A beautiful drive by Chisholm, which travelled half the field, was well saved by the Northern goalie. Agncw from a corner planted an excellent kick, but M'Hugh punched it out, the referee giving a had decision. The final;— Northern 8 Roslyn-Wakari 2 Mr A. W. Johnson was the referee. OLD BOYS’ FURTHER SUCCESS MORNINGTON DEFEATED M In a very even game on the Ova] Old Boys gained the decision over Mosgiel ’by the odd goal because of greater effectiveness near goal. The teams were : Old Bovs. —Smith ; Sutherland, Pickerill; M'Narey, Hamilton, Beal; Cameron, Paul, Latimer, Groves, Duncan. Mornington.—Brown ; Braithwaite, Harrison; Murphy, Fleming, Lowden; Henderson, M'Kenzie, Berry, Schofield, Sainsbury. Play commenced at a fast pace, with each side having a fair share of the ball. High School Old Boys opened the scoring when Latimer headed neatly in upon receiving a nicely placed cross from Duncan. Old Boys 1 Mornington 0 The remainder of the spell was uneventful. Both sides pressed frequently, but each lacked thrust, and were unable to penetrate. Shortly after the resumption High School Old Boys broke away, Groves received from Duncan and made no mistake with a fast shot near goal. Old Boys 2 Mornington 0 Five minutes later Mornington were put into a favourable position by a cross from Sainsburyand from the ensuing scramble in front of the Old Boys’ goal M'Kenzie netted. Ragged play followed, with little combined effort in evidence, while poor ball control minimised chances of scoring. A feature of the play was the appallingly poor shooting before goal. The game ended ; Old Boys 2 Mornington 1 Mr W. Woodcock controlled the game. TECHNICAL SOUNDLY TROUNCED SEAGLIFF IMPRESSIVE SCORING UNIT Seacliff easily retained its leading position on the competition ladder by trouncing Technical Old Boys at Seacliff to the tune of 9 goals to 3. The teams: — Seacliff. —Rankine, Anderson, Ruddiman. Hector. Truesdale, Thompson, Milne, Watson, Hooper, Jordan, Montgomery. Technical Old Boys.—Tointon, Taylor, Lawrence, G. Groves, R. Patton, W. Smith, Witchall, H. Groves, C. Smith, Jones, C. Patton. Because of Seacliff’s commanding superiority, undeniable from the very beginning of proceedings, the game was robbed of much of its interest. It really resolved itself into a question of how many goals Seacliff could score. However, after the side had opened its account early, leading 5-2 at half-time, it did not attempt after that stage to make the most of the host of opportunities presented by Technical. The Seacliff forwards, among whom Hooper, veteran centre, was outstanding, were a potent combination, and harassed the Technical defence without respite In contrast, Technical were sluggish and possessed little combination and less initiative. Hooper (4), Milne (2), Montgomery _ (2), and Thompson (1) scored for Seacliff, and Jones (2) and Witchall (1) for Technical. Final:— Seacliff 9 Technical 3 Mr J. Young was referee. SECOND GRADE.
