POWELL HOME IMPROVEMENTS

TREE-PLANTING CEREMONY WORK OF COMMITTEE Considerable renovations and extensions have been made during recent months at the James Powell .Rest Home at Warrington by the Patients and Prisoners’ Aid Society, with the result that the patients now have more comfortable accommodation and a modern kitchen has also been provided. Out of doors various alterations and improvements to the grounds have been planned in co-operation with Mr D. Tannock, superintendent of reserves. The present vegetable garden, which is in front of the home, is to be transferred to the rear, replacing it with lawns and a shrubbery and • a summer house. A number of improvements are also planned for renwicK Park, a section bequeathed to the society by the late Sir George Fenwick, where rustic bridges and seats are to be provided.

The first step in these improvements was taken on Saturday afternoon, when members of the society visited the home and planted trees bordering the entrance driveway, which will later form an avenue of limes, horse chestnuts, elms, and rowans. The trees were purchased by members of the committee and planted by them under the supervision of Mr Tannock. Mr Justice Kennedy, president of the society, planted the first tree, assisted by Mrs Kennedy, while other trees were planted by Messrs D. Phillips (chairman of the Home Committee), F. W. Mitchell A. Kilgour, H P. West, W. L. Moore, G. H. Flliffe, W. L. Logie, D. Tanno.ck, Dr J. Thomson, and Miss Downie Stewart. Miss Tennent, Mrs H. L. Cook, and Mrs J. Dev. Other trees were planted on behalf" of Messrs J. Louden, T. Somerville, W. Easton, H. llenfree, it. C. Burgess, Mrs E. C. Reynolds, and Mrs G. R. Ritchie, who were unable to be present. A donation of two dozen shrubs was also made tp the association by Messrs ll Nairn and Son, of Christchurch.

After afternoon tea had been served in the home Mr Justice Kennedy expressed his pleasure at being able to take part iu the ceremony. He was delighted with the results of the renovations, and when the work outside had been completed with the assistance of Mr Tannock, be was sure the surroundings would be entirely beautiful.

Hon. W. Downie Stewart, chairman of the General Committee, thanked His Honour, who, he said, was always keenly interested in the work of the society. The assistance of Mr Justice and Mrs Kennedy was highly valued. They were also indebted to the committee and to Mr Tannock, who were carrying out good and useful work. The trees planted would make a pleasing entrance to the home in time to come. For the. home itself they had to-thank Mr James Powell, of Westport, who was formerly a merchant in Dunedin. He hoped the work would continue, and that many people would benefit from the results of their work.

Mr D. Phillips, on behalf of the committee. briefly returned thanks.
