TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
TOURNAMENT PROSPECTS [By Lownet.] Entries for the Otago , table tenuis championship and handicap tournament, to be hold on Tuesday and Wednesday, were 190, a largo increase on last years figures. This year s number comprises 153 entries in the men s section and 37 in the ladies. It is very gratifying to receive such a. large number of entrants- for the men’s single championship, 16. Ine seeded . players entered ai<e-> Miller, Harrop, Cole, Martindale, Pollock, Hall Laidlaw. and Dunbar. > ■ J H. Don Miller, the present chain-, pioii, will have to be on top.form to win this year, as the most serious contender for the title, A.. Harrop, has ereatly improved since the last tournament. Martindale, Hall, Pollock, and Laidlaw are liable to upset calculations, as in top form they are m championship class. “ Miller has been singles champion lor the last three years, and is playing ai well as ever. He also beat F. laton. the present holder of the New Zealand championship, for the Auckland tit;* before coming to Dunedin. ■ The number of entrants for the ladies’ singles title has increased; tbi* year totalling 12. Miss M. Bennett, the present champion, is defending her title, but will have a difficult opponent in Miss N. Dads, of the Red Triangle team. . , . For the men’s championship double* 12 entries have been received, and last year’s winners, Patchett and Laidlaw, will be defending their title. Opposing players include C. and G. Cfaridge, Cole and Martindale, and Harrop and A. Barclay. In the ladies’ section, of the five entries received, Misses E. Dawson and N. Davis, or Misses D. and M. Fogarty look the probable winners.. Miss Dawsop and Miss N. Ross wer• last yeat’s winners. Entries for the men’s handicap singles and doubles are also very satis, factory.. The increase in the number of entrants for the various events as. comwith previous years indicates that table tenuis is becoming a popular i . ,•),• man", and within the next year or so should have a big following.
