TRACK WORK AT TRENTHAM

TRIAL GRASS A QUAGMIRE IPeb United Press Association. 1 WELLINGTON, July 6. A violent storm over the week-end settled all prospects of anything except heavy going for the opening day ot the Wellington Winter Meeting, the weather was still bleak and showery for the final work at Trentham this morning, but later in the day the sun broke_ through the clouds and oveihead conditions became more promising. So; bad, was the jzoing on the trial grass that to time the gallops was next to useless. There were two schools over five permanent fences of the big country. The going along the back on this course was much better than elsewhere. Illuniinagh (J. M'Crae), Tangled (C. Thomson), Battleground (S. Wright), Kaola (A. Gilmer), and Llyn Dhu (J. Walsh) set off together. Llyn Dhu broke down after jumping the second fence, but the others all gave good displays. Illumiuagh and Tangled were always in front, with Battleground joining them at the last fence. The. other group to school were Forest Glow (C. Thomson), Manawatu. (A. McDonald), and Comgtra (Mv G. H. James), all of whom fenced without blemish. Forest Glow- looks as fit as could be, but the other two are also in fine order with Manawatu an improved horse. There were only two bouts over the hurdles. Blue Tiger (C. M‘Govern), 'and Emotion (J. Walsh) jumped four fences without fault, and Beau Gallante (C. Thomson) and Aiguille (I. Rohloff), after running off at the first fence, followed with a similar task, though their performance was not quite so goad. Galloping on the trial grass, which wr.,4 little better than a quagmire, wr.s of no practical value. Most of the visitors are now on the scene,' but few trainers sent their horses against the watch. The best times clocked were those of Snowball and De Trop, who ran half a mile in sosec, and of Mustang and Boomerang, who ran the last half of five furlongs in the same time. In the latter gallop Mustang finished clear, but Boomerang’s trials were inclined to vary. Boomerang will now be ridden in the Whyte Handicap by R. E. Horne, as Shy is not likely to start. The watch was on Epris when he went out with Double Shot, but’ the pair took 59isee for the last half of five furlongs. Dungarvau looks improved since the Wanganui meeting, and there js now an impression he will start in the Whyte Handicap. Royal Banquet was again sore after working and looks a very unlikely starter.

Dunmure moved along well and as he is now' almost certain to start in the big steeples, his stablemate, Miss Winston, may be run in the Hack Steeples. The only additional scratchings are The Ranger, for all engagements, and Red Sun (at 9.50 a.m. to-day) for the Trentham Hurdles.
