DELEGATE TO PACIFIC CONFERENCE

DR MERRINGTDN APPOINTED LEAVING THIS MONTH Dr E. N. Herrington, master of Knox College, has been appointed a New Zealand delegate to the conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations, to be held at the Yosemite National Park, United States, in August. He will later attend tlie tercentary celebrations of Harvard 'University, after which he will visit the Mother Country and return to New Zealand via Suez. He will leave New Zealand towards the end of this month. The conference, said Dr Herrington, would be attended by the representatives of all the leading countries of the Pacific. He understood that Professor Belshaw, of Auckland, who is at present abroad, Mr T. M. Hall, Miss Seaton, and Mr B. R. Turner (all of Wellington) would also attend the conference. It was expected that many matters _ of great economic and international importance woul(J be discussed, and that special attention would be given to the situation in the Far East. At the conclusion of the conference Dr Herrington intends to _be present at the tercentenary celebrations of Har-

vard University as the representative of the University of Queensland. He was a member of the Senate of that university for a number of years. He will attend the symposia which are to be held in commemoration of the event, which really marks the 300th anniversary of higher education in America. Part of the ceremony will be addresses by 75 well-known university men, including Professor Einstein. During the absence of Dr Herrington his place at Knox College will be filled by ’ > J. D. Salmond, who was for so mi. / years assistant master and is now youth director .of the Presbyterian Church. Dr Merrington came to Dunedin from Brisbane, where he "was minister of St. Andrew’s Church for 13 years. For a period of five years he occupied the pulpit of First Church, and he has been master of the college for eight years. Some years ago he published a book entitled ‘ A Great Coloniser,’ dealing with the life of the Rev. Dr Burns. He has also written some philosophical works. Dr Merrington will be accompanied by Mrs Merrington, and will leave Auckland by the Niagara on July 21.
