CHICAGO, June 29. Creeping into the room where she and her son, aged seven, slept, a negro or masked man early to-day beat a twenty-five-year-old night club entertainer to death with a brick, and fled after scrawling the words “ Black Legion game ” with a lipstick on a mirror. There were a skull and crossbones underneath the writing. The child, James Castle, at the dawn hours after the attack, stumbled sleepily to the lobby of the hotel, where he and his mother, Mrs Florence Castle, were staying, and told of the attack. The boy said he awoke to see a man bending over his mother alternately choking her and hitting her on the head with a brick. The woman’s purse was emptied. The child was so frightened that he did not try to get up at the time of the attack. He then fell asleep. Later awakening and seeing his mother covered with blood, he gave the alarm.
