BAKERS AND PASTRYCOOKS

EXEMPTION FROM FORTY-HOUR WEEK ASKED [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 30. Difficulties in the way of applying the forty-hour week prescribed in -the Factories Amendment Act to the baking and pastrycook industry in New Zealand were stressed by the employers when asking in the Arbitration Court to-day for an extension of hours to 44 and , the right to work 10' hours in any one day. The employers claimed that speeding up the process of bread baking to conform with the restriction of hours would seriously affect the quality of the loaf, with a resultant falling off in the consumption of wheat products. The application was. opposed by the representative of the workers, who said' the employers had consistently opposed every reform proposed. The court reserved its decision.
