THE FIRST TEST ALLEN TO CAPTAIN ENGLAND LONDON, June 16. (Received Juno 17, at 1 p.m.) Critics agree that the test trial, ending in an honourable but somewhat barren draw, did not reveal mncli to assist the selectors. To-day’s highlight was Turnbull s quick-footed, impressive innings Allen, although not conspicuous for h:s batting and bowling, revealed sound generalship. and his selection _ was announced for the captaincy in the first test against India. His performance in it will undoubtedly influence his chtwices for the captaincy for the .Australian tour.
