OVERTURES TO JAPAN INDUCEMENTS OFFERED Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright CANBERRA, June 16. ’As an inducement to Japan to reopen tradg treaty negotiations, the Commonwealth GoVernment is prepared to transfer Japanese goods from the general tariff division to the intermediate division. This would reduce the duty oil Japanese rayon from 9d to 8d a yard, and on cotton piece goods by a farthing all round. Australia is also prepared to undertake to ensure that Japan retains at least ,half of her present textile trade, while facilities will also be afforded for Japan steadily to expand her Australian trade as a good customer country. RESUMPTION OF NEGOTIATIONS UNLIKELY TOKIO, June 16. (Received June 17, at 2 p.m.) Mr Arita is reported to have told members of Cabinet that a resumption of trade negotiations with Australia is impossible unless Australia cancels her tariff increases against Japan. JAPAN BUYS SHORT WOOLS. PORT ELIZABETH, June 16. (Received June 17, at 2 p.m.) Japanese wool buyers are unusually interested in short wools. A steamer is loading 3,700 bales, compared with 12 bales exported to Japan last June.
