HARRIERS

ST. KILDA. 1 The St. Kildn Harriers held their annual three-mile junior and open handicap races. Beginning at the car terminus, the course lay along Victoria road to Bird street, at which place a turn was made into Lovers’ Lane, which was followed to the cemetery gates. From here Lawyers Head road was followed to Tahuna, and the course finished at the-terminus. In the junior race J. Middlemiss, the limit man, was despatched by the starter, Mr Boardnian, to be followed Imin 45sec later by E. Cope. Middlemiss held his position until Tahuna was reached. Here K. Clark took the lead from him. The results were: K. Clark 1, J. Middlemiss 2, E. Cope 3. Fastest time went to E. Cope. In the open race 14 men faced the starter. L. Carter, the limit man, set off at a fast pace, and he was followed 2min 45sec later by the scratch man, L. Dickson. This was a hard-fought race, and resulted in these ■ platings: ]{. The Caversham Club held its mile vice-president’s race at St. Kilda. Before the race the members were assembled, and Mr Holley made reference to the passing of Mr Alex. Mann, a well-known member of the club a few years ago., The club then stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect. A good field of 30 lined up for the start, and were promptly dispatched by the starter, MrHolley. The course was along Victoria road to Moreau street, then turning into Lover’s Lane, which was followed right along to the Cemetery, thence down Tomahawk road, and back to Victoria road, finishing outside the band rotunda. From the start the front markers, led by J. Petherick. set a fairly solid pace, and at Hancock Park, •after covering about three-quarters of a mile, Petenck. was still in the lead, followed by Rutherford and Stewart. When the turn was reached at the cemetery, Cyossan had established a lead of '2oyds on Stewart, who was followed by iff. Emmerson, J. Cummings; then came a big bunch headed by J. Maddox. At Chisholm Park the order had changed a little, with Crossan still in the lead, and J. Maddox and W. Darling making a bid for honours. Just after turning into Victoria road Maddox and Darling succeeded in heading Crossan, and this order remained unchanged to the finish, with the rest of the field finishing very closely. . -j Result;—J. Maddox 1, W. Darling 2, G. Crossan 3 Time, 18min 12sec. Fastest times: G. Austin (17min 35sec), W Darling (17min 54sec), J Haddocks (18min 12sec). ANGLICAN. Anglican ran from the Old Caversham School, with a muster of 25 members. The trail lay from the school up Caversham Valley road to Look-out Point, thence through paddocks to Kaikorai Valley road. The hill was climbed to the Southern Reservoir, Some good harrier country behind the reservoir was crossed, fhe pack then returning to the. valley and climbing to Look-out Point. The run home from the point resulted in Randle, M'Gregor, Miller, and Clulee arriving bunched. Thepack was controlled by Harrier-captain Logan. The slow pack, under the whistle of Road-captain Divers, the same trail to the reservoir, continuing round the race for about 'three miles. A roadline then followed to Green Island, thence returning to the school via the Main road. In the run home, Grindley was first, closely followed by M'Dermott. Others prominent were Lorden and Scott. HANOVER BAPTIST. above club held its run from the North-east Valley Baptist Church. The trail led along the Main North road to the Normanhy terminus, then up Antram street, and up through the paddocks and through the bush on to Signal Hill. Making their way up to the Trig station, the members ran down the hillside through the bush and scrub towards the hills at the back of St. Leonards. The pack eventually came out at the Sawyers Bav road, then made its way to the High road, where the runners split up into two packs. The <slow pack, under First-deputy E. Meggett, went down the short cut and had a good run to the Normanhy tram terminus. Here a good pace was setfi, and in a fast run-A. Young, A. Marshall, and A. M'Lay came in close together. The fast pack, going down the High road, maintained a fast pace and finished up in a bunch. COMBINED RUN. Mornington, University, and Dunedin held an enjoyable combined run from the George Street School, 53 members turning out under the whistles of Captains Burton (M.), Marsh (U.), and Lorimer (D.). The packs, running together, left the school and turned up Leith Valley road and then up the bullock track to Maori Hill. The trail led through the plantation to the Reservoir and _ here the packs separated. The racing pack under Deputycaptain Hall (M.), put in some stremp ous work on the Pino Hill side of the Leith Valley, coming out at Patinos Avenue. A hard run home was held over the last one and a-half .miles M'Laren (D.) leading in from Croo’e (M.) with Hall (M.) third. The fast pack continued up Leith Valley for some distance and then turned for home from the bus terminus, the result being a win for Munro (M.) with Woods (U.) second, Wilson (M.) third, and Matthews (U.) fourth. The slow pack did some cross-country work over similar ground to the racing pack, eventually coming out on the Pine Hill road. A short run home was held from the Wbodhaugh Bridge, Lamb (M.) being first. CIVIL SERVICE. With an attendance of 43 runners, the Civil Service Club’s weekly run was held from the Anderson’s Bay School. Under the leadership of Captain Gerken, the racing pack had a solid workout over a trail leading to Tomahawk and Smaill’s Beach. From here the runners headed for the Highcliff road, eventuallv coming out by the cafe. The road” was followed for a short distance towards Pukehiki, then the runners descended to the Portobello road, and held a four-mile run home, which resulted in L. C. M'Laehlan heading L. R. M'Millan and W. M'Kinnon. The slow pack, with , Deputy-captain Spence in charge of the whistle - , kent to the road, the course being to the Highcliff Cafe, down the road to Tomahawk, and home via the cemetery. In the run home T. Toner was first followed by P. Spence and L. Wilson. The inniors were again kept in one pack. Dcputv-ca [itai'i Williams being in charge. Most of the work of this pack was across country, the runners leaving the road at the Chinese gardens and running across country to Smaill’s Beach. Herbison was first, followed by E. Asher, D. Fox, and W. Wheeler, in that order. In the .absence of Mr M'Kernan, S. Longwoith took charge of the colts, and led them across country to the Anglican Boys’ Home and thence to the Monument. In a run on the road back from the Monument, each boy in thh pack took a turn at leading. A new member. W. liean, who was out for the first time, showed definite promise. In the Kennett Cup Race at Christchurch to-day, the club was again successful in winning individual honours and gaining the teams’ race. In winning the race, A. R. Geddes showed his best form, while •). T. Barnes ran a good race for third place. In view of the fact that Barnes has been troubled with a strained abdominal muscle, it was not expected that he would be so .dose up. Although rot yet fit. Asher ran well to fill tenth p’ace and Holland’s (seventeenth place) was a good effort. LEITH. Leith held its first sports meeting at Ross Creek Reservoir. Result:— One-mile Handicap. A.
