BRIGADE NOTES The North-east Valley Nursing Division having completed the course* of first aid classes, is now enrolling pew members for the.series of home nursing lectures,' and oh Monday evening last Ass, ..Comm, Col. P. fl.‘Morey, Diet. 'Supt. J. C. White, and Act. Dist. Officer H. 0. Marsh inspected the division at practice. The visitors expressed their pleasure at the 1 high standard of work displayed, also of the keenness of the younger members. An instructive lecture on the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes was delivered by Dr Clark Hanan. , ' .. . A team from the Hillside Division, comprising Messrs M. F. Ford, A. R. M-Ewan, P. MacPherson, and L; Morrison, under Superintendent W. T. Hobby, paid a visit to the. Kaikorai Division on Monday evening to demonstrate the application of , the “ Thomas splint,” also a few practical examples of ’ triangular bandaging. The visit was, very much appreciated by the members, and Superintendent Arnott, thanking the" visitors on_ behalf of the division, expressed the view that visits of this nature would do much to foster a closer friendship between the various divisions in Otago. All members are reminded ,of the rehearsal parade to be held in ,the Drill Hall, Kensington, on Friday, June 19, at 7.30 p.m., in connection with the .King's Birthday parade. - The following appointments have been approved by the Chief Commissioner:—Hillside, Railway Division—P. M'Phefson to be corporal and divisional storekeeper; J. Penson to be sergeant and divisional treasurer. For 50 years the brigade has carried out its public duties in close co-opera-tion with the police force of the country. and during those years has shown its high standard _of training, its keenness, and its discipline. This has been more than ever apparent during the past year, when its voluntary work was fully tested under the eyes of the public in all the great cities of the Empire during the Silver Jubilee celebrations, Its London and counties members have been more severely tested during the past sad days when their work was rendered difficult by the unexpectedly large crowds which gathered in London to do homage to on r late beloved King, and which resulted in over 7,000 casualties being dealt with by them in the metropolis and 416 cases at Windsor.

Conspicuous among the gigantic crowds that gathered in London for the funeral of His late Majesty King George V., and on all occasions when large numbers' congregate, the St. John Ambulance Brigade has become taken for granted, and its voluntary nature often overlooked. ■ The forgoing of a day’s holiday or even the loss of a day’s work are in many cases the only means by which some members of the brigade can be present on these public occasions. The following letter, which has been received by Sir- John Duncan, K.C.8.. C.M.G.. C.V.0.. D. 5.0.. the Chief Commissioner of the St. John Ambulance Brigade from His Royal Highness the Duke of • Connaught, the Grand Prior of the Venerable Order of St. John. is. therefore, of special interest:—“ As Grand Prior of the Venerable Order of St. John. I wish to express through you to all ranks of the St. John Ambulance Brigade the admiration I feel for its work in the cause of humanity.”
