LAUREL AND HARDY FOR MAYFAIR Again Laurel and Hardy have done it! They have produced for theatregoers another laugh hit —perhaps their best since their advent as a team. They run the gamut from high expectations to disillusionment through the featurelength Hal Roach-M-G-M comedy, ‘ Bonnie Scotland,’ which will commence at the Mayfair to-morrow with ‘ Living on Velvet.’ Laurel, as Stanley M‘Laurel, is notified that he is mention'd' in the will of a wealthy uncle in Scotland, so, accompanied by his grandiose friend, Oliver Hardy, he arrives in the heather-land to take over the magnificent estate of the late relative. But the estate, so far as Stan is concerned, consists of some valueless heirlooms. After his disillusionment the pair become involved in an hilarious situation which ends with them being recruited in the Scottish Highlanders and assigned for foreign duty in India in His Majesty’s service. From this point on the two, attired in kilts, romp through a series of exciting adventures. ‘ Living on Velvet ’ is a smashing drama with an unusual twist on the eternal love triangle. Kay Francis, in the stellar role, gives one of the finest characterisations of her career as the beautiful society girl torn between her affection for one man and her mad infatuation for the other.
